Are you using a laptop? If so, there should be a fn button, and one of the number or F keys should say something like CRT/LCD. Hold down the fn button and press that key after plugging in the external monitor.

audiodef ... hmmmm, wouldn't that depend on there being some acpid 'action' that corresponds with this key? ie:

/etc/acpi/default.sh:
case "$group" in
  button)
    case "$action" in
      [...]
      switchmode)
        /etc/acpi/actions/xrandr.sh
        ;;
      [...]

... and then something like the following 'xrandr.sh'

/etc/acpi/actions/xrandr.sh:
#!/bin/sh

if [ -n $(xrandr -q | grep '^VGA connected' >/dev/null) ] ; then
  # "VGA connected"
  xrandr --output VGA --above LVDS --auto
  xrandr --output LVDS --auto
else
  # "VGA not connected"
  xrandr --auto
fi

... at least this was the case when I'd needed such a thing.

HTH & best ... khay
