there are 3 people in #gentoo-mate, nobody saying a word for months.

Lurking in a quiet channel, until it's perhaps busier, is a good thing. ;-)

Just use it as an adjunct to #gentoo-desktop and #gentoo-dev-help, and make it your own.

Ask in ##workingset for build-system advice. And don't forget to learn #bash properly.

There is also #cmake which is another quiet one.

Hmm, well I got the mate-desktop git repo to build... what exactly is it we should be testing? Thanks in advance..

Edit:
Wrote a simple ebuild for mate-1.14.0 using rinaldus-overlay. Hope it works for everyone.. :)

It will vary over time; ask in #gentoo-desktop on IRC: chat.freenode.net or .org as to what needs doing currently.
The overall goal is stabilisation for the gentoo tree.

Typically projects work in an overlay, then push to the main tree; eg KDE does this, so does haskell, both very successfully.

That's a good start. :-)

Ask #-desktop and #gentoo-dev-help for review (I'd start with the latter.)

HTH.

I have a MATE overlay too.

https://github.com/jorgicio/mate-jorgicio

It's somewhat improved and maintained too. You may try it too and sending some feedback through an issue.

In case any of the devs are hanging out here: please rev libmateweather.
https://github.com/mate-desktop/libmateweather/issues/30#issuecomment-242190096
The gnomes may want to pay attention as well and update libgweather.

The only problem I can see is that the fix is somewhat incomplete when it comes to forecasts https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2016-August/160896.html.

I am preparing fresh Gentoo innstallation and I am planing to use MATE desktop. I have selected

default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop

profile and now I am going to emerge MATE metapackage. But before doing this I want to update my @world, and the emerge command tries to install lots of gnome packages. I suppose I selected not apropriate profile, but I am not sure about it.

Same profile here, and I have some 25 packages installed that somehow have "gnome" in the name, or are from gnome-base/gnome-extra.

I am (was) running on two different machines both Mate-1.12 and ~Mate-1.14 from Gentoo's portage. With Mate-1.12 -gtk3 the desktops are stable and usable. After switching to Mate-1.12 +gtk3 (Gentoo Stable)things just went wrong.

1. I can't change desktop backgrounds without logging out and then back in.
2. After right clicking a desktop item and selecting an item from the menu, the menus won't disappear and lie there unusable. A second right click pulls up a new menu that will also lie there dead. Dragging any window across these dead menus erases them, but leaves other artifacts on the desktop.
3. Dragging windows across the desktop leaves a dark gray or black image where the windows use to be placed.

Logging out and back in returns the desktop to normal where these problems just start all over again. If I enable the "software composting manager" things settle down a little but it makes the fonts much more difficult to read and doesn't solve the background or right click problem.

Some applications, "Steam Linux Client" mostly open in a huge black window with the Steam Client interface in the upper right corner of the black window and bounces around in an erratic manner. This one is ugly and makes the Steam Client all but unusable. (might be an nvidia-drivers issue but I am unsure of this at the moment).

Moving one of the systems back to Mate-1.12 -gtk3 makes it completely stable and usable again.

I have managed to get the other system to run ~Mate-1.14 +gtk3 performing better, but it still suffers from the background and right click issues and I have to disable the "software composting manager" before it stops leaving artifacts on the desktop when dragging windows.

Has anyone one else experienced these problems and if so how have you solved them.

TIA..... :)

When will 1.18 stabilize? I'm running it on a few machines, including FreeBSD, and it looks good. Even managed to disable the annoying tooltips (mostly ...), and powermanager/suspend on lid is finally working.

YES! I tried going back to gtk2 but it was worse. I'm probably mixing gtk2 and gtk3. I'll try moving all mate stuff back to gtk2 and report back. I also boot lumina so I will do my emerge's there.

Problem seems to be solved. I rebuilt everything in the chain with -gtk3. It took 25 minutes. Initially portage took 23 minutes just to fail to resolve and tell me emerge 1.18, but tracking down mate-common fixed it.

Here are excerpts from my package.use
Code:
tony@X3 ~ $ grep -- -gtk3 /etc/portage/package.use
dev-libs/libmateweather  -python -gtk3
mate-base/caja -gtk3
mate-base/libmatekbd -gtk3
mate-base/mate -extras notification -gtk3

Maybe i build mate without opengl support and get drawing problem, and even transparent background in mate-terminal is not transparent it's black

I emerged mate-1.18.1 with USE=-gtk3 and ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~amd64

Works better than mate-1.12, mate-terminal-1.18.1 draw in transparent mode even desktop buttons without any problem

P\S
mate-terminal-1.18.1 draws flash video in transparent mode from browser and even more %))))))

But artifacts still shows, but not much, i think it is video driver bug or hardware problem.

I know I'm a little late but you need software compositing enabled for transparency to work. It's under settings, look and feel, windows.

edit: Any idea how long until we can see 1.20 in the tree? I think this is coming out any day now.

TigerJr Latest mate-1.18 works beautifully here. Latest bugfixes to bugs I encountered (mate-panel, caja, upower, etc) went into micro versions, which may not be in portage tree or gentoo-mate overlay. I use gentoo-mate overlay plus bumping to latest micro versions with bare cp of the ebuilds. See upstream packages:

http://pub.mate-desktop.org/releases/1.18/?C=M&O=D

Since this version just works for me I luckily have no more rush to the latest and greatest version (1.20). :o

p.s.: I finally could ditch upower-pm-utils for upower and still have suspend and hibernate. I had to move to upower for support of logitech's unifying receiver usb wireless mouse with latest 4.14er kernel.

TigerJr I don't know what gpu you got. I had some horrible artifacts and glitches, which are finally all gone - intel sandybridge gpu.
See: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93567

So you may ask your gpu driver developers, opera/vivaldi developers or mate developers to get to the root of the issue.
If they are good devs, they are at least interested to just know about, if you address it so in the bugreport.

I recommend doing a screen capture of the glitches by SimpleScreenRecorder.
See: https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/tree/media-video/simplescreenrecorder

I have idea for how long Mate-1.20 would ebuild in portage tree, about month

Especially there is no reaction from gentoolopers, they have a lack of manpower

its kindof sad to see that we're still lagging behind. :(

edit: i just took a stab at making ebuilds for 1.20.0. they are in my overlay (see sig).

(barely) TESTED USE AT YOUR OWN RISK (i know i need to update the dependancy lists, but as long as you have gtk 3 and glib installed you should be fine for now)
edit: this has been tested by a few users so this should be just fine.

Code:

/etc/portage/package.keywords/keywords:
mate-base/* ~amd64
mate-extra/* ~amd64
app-arch/engrampa ~amd64
app-editors/pluma ~amd64
app-text/atril ~amd64

bunder,

I'd be happy to try them on ~amd64 and ~arm64 if they were repoman clean or came with a list of problems.
From the headers, you didn't run repoman as it would complain about the copyright date.
