PostPosted: Sun Nov 15, 2015 7:00 am    Post subject: Failure of forced build of X-server on headless VM [SOLVED] Reply with quote

Hello, I'm trying to update a headless QEMU-KVM virtual machine with Gentoo as the guest OS. As the machine is headless, there is no point in building an X server on it but I do wish to build an XFCE-based desktop, which will run via XDMCP. This used to work but the most recent emerge @world is trying to build x11-base/xorg-server, and failing.

The build is forced by various of the clients having xorg-server as a dependency, which I don't understand:
equery d x11-base/xorg-server:
 * These packages depend on x11-base/xorg-server:
app-accessibility/at-spi2-atk-2.16.0 (!prefix ? x11-base/xorg-server[xvfb])
app-crypt/gcr-3.16.0 (!prefix ? x11-base/xorg-server[xvfb])
app-crypt/libsecret-0.18.3 (!prefix ? x11-base/xorg-server[xvfb])
app-emulation/wine-1.7.51 (!prefix ? x11-base/xorg-server[xvfb])
dev-libs/glib-2.44.1-r1 (!prefix ? x11-base/xorg-server[xvfb])
dev-libs/libpeas-1.14.0-r1 (!prefix ? x11-base/xorg-server[xvfb])
...

The subsequent dificulty is that the emerge of xorg-server fails and the relevant extract from the build.log is:
Code:
...
checking for gcry_md_open in -lgcrypt... yes
checking for SHA1_Init in -lcrypto... yes
checking for OPENSSL... yes
checking for SHA1 implementation... libcrypto
checking for XSERVERCFLAGS... no

No package 'xcmiscproto' found
No package 'bigreqsproto' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.
...

So obviously the problem is that those two packages xcmiscproto and bigreqsproto are not built, but why are they not simply in the ebuild as dependencies?

First of all, both of those packages are in xorg-server deps.
Second, the xorg-server revdep list looks bogus - that is all the listed have only a conditional dep, inherited from virtualx eclass and depending on FEATURES=test.

Thanks for the answer but I must confess that I don't fully understand it. /etc/portage/make.conf has FEATURES="ccache" only. The active profile is default/linux/x86/13.0/desktop/gnome/systemd -- maybe that is the problem? I did try setting it to default/linux/x86/13.0/desktop (and added systemd to the USE flags) but emerge -qa @world was still going to pull in xorg-server.

Well, equery is really bad, when it comes to conditional deps.
As for features, 'test' isn't set bydefault, so as long as 'emerge --info' doesn't tell otherwise, that should be clear.

Paste(bin) full output of 'equery d xorg-server', let's see what you've got there.

Sorry to mess you around. When I looked more carefully at the list of dependencies, the 'real' one was net-misc/remmina. I don't know why this needs a server; presumably it only works on an in-memory connection thereto. Anyway, with remmina removed from the build, it is proceeding as desired.
