I just changed my fontconfig to match the one posted here:

http://kev009.com/wp/2009/12/getting-beautiful-fonts-in-gentoo-linux/

Specifically:

It looks great except for the space between letters. Some letters are touching each other and there is too much space between others. Does anyone have an idea of how to fix that?

Try without workarounds like autohint and the globaladvance fix enabled. Freetype has changed a bit in the last 6 years.

I don't have globaladvance in my fontconfig but I disabled autohint and the problem I posted about is fixed but then the original problem I was trying to fix with fontconfig has returned which is distorted and unreadable fonts on some websites such as cnn.com. Any ideas?

That's a common problem with websites using 1990s design techniques like manually specifying "Helvetica" as a font.

Disabling aliases might help there. Your browser's developer console should show what font it's actually displaying as. The "distorted and unreadable" makes it sound like it's using Luxi Sans or similar.

Enabling 10-unhinted.conf along with 10-autohint.conf fixes the cnn.com fonts and spaces letter appropriately. Any idea what unhinted does?
