Posted: Wed Nov 11, 2015 7:03 pm Post subject: [SOLVED] Google chrome won't start |
|
|
Hi,
I've been running a new install on a new build system and I've come across a problem that I can't quite get to the bottom of. When I first got everything built from the downloaded stages and portage tarballs, everything seemed OK. I installed chrome and it ran without any complaints. Since running an update, I'm unable to get any version of chrome or chromium to start. If I start it from the app menu, I get absolutely nothing. But the process is listed in ps. If I start from the cli again nothing, but the command does not exit.
I ran an strace which gave the output http://pastebin.com/pBXvJrKV. The last 4 lines are repeated to infinity in extremely high volumes.
Any advice would be great
TIA
CD

I would guess it is because this is quite bleeding edge.
You will probably have to make your system more bleeding edge in order to make it work.
Pull it back and see what happens.
Cheers. _________________ Whatever you do, do it properly! |

Hey, Thanks for the reply. That's what I thought, so both packages had been added the packages.keywords.
I'll try your suggestion, so I've removed the atom from /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask.
Please hold while I compile

Hey, no dice I'm afraid
I wonder if it's something as daft as use flags on a dep? But it's pin pointing which dep is the problem.
I'll adjust my use flags and update my packages. _________________ # touch it

Any difference if you use '--no-sandbox' as a runtime option?
I'm on ~amd64 (kde4 systemd) and all three google-chrome versions in portage are working for me after testing them just now. I have yet to try Chromium.

Hi davidm, Unfortunately not. Even after rebuilding 133 packages with tweaked use flags. I've just done another tweak which has resulted in 155 packages. I'll see what happens after that. _________________ # touch it

Ok we have progress I disabled the tcmalloc flag and enabled gtk3 flag. Chromium still wouldn't start, but at least I was not getting an error. Tried the --no-sandbox switch and woohoo, I got chromium. I now have something to work with to pin point the source of the problem.
Code: | $ chromium --no-sandbox
[3563:3563:1128/165347:ERROR:browser_main_loop.cc(203)] Running without the SUID sandbox! See https://code.google.com/p/chromium/wiki/LinuxSUIDSandboxDevelopment for more information on developing with the sandbox on.

Hi, Does this make any sense to anyone? It looks to me as though chrome/chromium has a major issue when creating a sandbox or just a red heron with no using tcmalloc?
Code: | $ chromium

I compiled chromium with the absolute minimum use flags.
Code: | [ebuild R ~] www-client/chromium-48.0.2564.41::gentoo USE="(pic) -cups -custom-cflags (-gn) -gnome -gnome-keyring (-gtk3) -hangouts -hidpi -hotwording -kerberos (-neon) -proprietary-codecs -pulseaudio (-selinux) -system-ffmpeg -tcmalloc {-test} -widevine" LINGUAS="en_GB -am -ar -bg -bn -ca -cs -da -de -el -es -es_LA -et -fa -fi -fil -fr -gu -he -hi -hr -hu -id -it -ja -kn -ko -lt -lv -ml -mr -ms -nb -nl -pl -pt_BR -pt_PT -ro -ru -sk -sl -sr -sv -sw -ta -te -th -tr -uk -vi -zh_CN -zh_TW" |

Looks like it's possibly a kernel issue as chrome/chromium use the sandbox provided by the kernel.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/2B7gHJPQAtE pointed me in the right direction.
Time to see how unstable my system will become on a kernel older than 4.4 _________________ # touch it

Do you have CONFIG_{USER,PID,NET}_NS=y in your kernel .config? Those are needed for the chrome sandbox to work. |

Hi,
After weeks of trying various things and several emerge -e world's, I gave up and started again. It looks like I possibly overcooked my original build with customized flags and what not. I completed a brand new build with minimalist flags and only added required flags to specific apps. Everything seems to run better and chrom[e|ium] now runs
You would think after using Gentoo for 14 years, I'd know better. DOH!
Cheers for all your help. _________________ # touch it
