I am using xscreensaver 5.10. The first time I tried this instead of gnome-screensaver, I encountered a problem
When I was trying to wake up my screen by moving the moust I got a small area in the center of the screen said
"Authentication failed for shaopeng". Looking into /var/log/messages I found

Code:

I have to restart the X to re-log-in.

/etc/pam.d/xscreensaver
Code:

auth   include      system-auth

Did I set anything wrong? Thank you.

I am also affected by this, without solution so far.

I even tried to compile it with suid with no results.

But I can tell you that restart X is not needed, just go to a TTY, and do a
Code:
killall xscreensaver
and go back to the TTY where your desktop is...

However this is becomming annoying and I don't really know what is happening (I don't even have log entries in /var/log/messages regarding this)

got this too,

as far as I know nothing related or relevant changed to provoke this change in behavior :o

I recall having read this on the german subforums some months ago but there was no solution being posted

Yes indeed, nothing seems to appear to caused this, happened suddenly, but no clue what caused it, and no clue how to even debug what is happening in here, as it is having clearly problems with auth checking.

alright,

found out that I, indeed, did change something:

I migrated from one partition to another (stage4 extraction),

so it must be a permissions problem, as usual,

@Ginta:

does an uninstall

and then new emerge xscreensaver help ?

well, that was quite close already to the solution :D

(I probably had a different issue:
Code:
unix_chkpwd check pass; user unknown
)

for good measure I tinkered somewhat with unix_chkpwd and its permissions but that didn't make any change,

then re-emerged sys-libs/pam,

after that emerged xscreensaver with additional USE-flags new-login and suid (including an upgrade from 5.33 to 5.34)

restarted xscreensaver - and that worked.

So it was definitely caused by permissions issues !

And the permissions "dance" seemed to have helped

(or some bug in 5.33 ?)

Removed the suid USE-flag and re-emerged xscreensaver,

restarted it and voilà !

It works now
