|
|
My current tinderbox is at a i7-3770 (4 cores, 8 threads) has 16 GB. There I do run 6 chroot images, each gets a 9 GB RAM /var/tmp/portage as tmpfs. I'm looking for a box with more RAM at my ISP to lower the risk of an overbooked RAM. My ISP offers an older 990x (6 cores) with 24 GB or a i7-3770 with 32 GB RAM.
/me wonders if more CPU's rules over more RAM ? |

Only way to know is to test...
I don't have a recent AMD box but i7 cores are pretty fast... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Hi toralf,
i would take a look at your current cpu usage and ram usage at your tinderbox. Try to analyze your current load situation. It is a specific issue in your situation.
As far as i can tell, i got at Hetzner a i3770/16 GB Ram/MD Raid. It is faster than my 8 core AMD 8350/16 GB/HW Raid 5. (I mean faster when i use emerge and stuff to rebuild). On my laptop i got a I7 2760 and 16GB too, it is slower than my 8350. The 3770 is the fastest CPU i currently run with gentoo. I used to use most times AMD CPUs, but in the last time AMD lost the connection to the cutting edge performance. Sad but true .... _________________ // valid again: I forgot about the git access. yep, not easy to decide b/c at the 6-core every core every physical cpu has its own cache, currently at least 2 chroot images here shares a cache b/c they do run at the same physical cpu. |

The i7-2760QM is a laptop chip, hopefully its thermals are squared away else it will be slow.
Cache doesn't mean much unless it means much :D You'll have to experiment unfortunately...
I suspect some packages, one will come out faster than the other and vice versa on others. What I need to do is upgrade my Core2 Quad VM box with 6GB RAM to something else. Mostly because DDR2 is not cost effective anymore... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD
