Trying to startx leads to an "Fatal Server Error: No Screens Found" message.

https://bpaste.net/show/d7052b297f67 - /var/logs/Xorg.0.log

https://bpaste.net/show/698dcea42e2a - /etc/portage/make.conf

I've followed all the guides in the WIKI as far as KDE is concerned.

I added a 00-device.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ - https://bpaste.net/show/58715ba0ab1b

Which now results in this xorg.0.log file - https://bpaste.net/show/39b362760720 - which looks like an improvement, but I can't be sure.

Still getting fatal error no screens found.

I have never had the proprietary drivers on this computer at all, its been nouveau only.

What am I missing, if anything?

EDIT: Kernel has Nouveau (NVIDIA) Cards enabled in the kernel built-in. All other Direct Rendering Manager items are unchecked.

Framebuffer Devices -> everything in here has been unchecked. The only thing that was checked was EFI-based Framebuffer Support.

NOTE: when I boot I get the 8 or 9 penguins at the top of the screen and the console appears to be hi-res.

SPECS: ASUS ROG G751JY-DH71 Gaming Laptop
Intel i7
NVIDIA Geforce m980 GTX
24gb ram
(please look it up if you need more precise specs)

You logs say
Code:
[  2983.220] (EE) [drm] KMS not enabled

You have to enable Kernel ModeSetting : https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Guide/en#Kernel_modesetting

I followed that guide and I'm still getting the same error.

McPuffin,

What does
Code:
uname -v
say?

When did you last build your kernel?

So I solved this problem by booting from the correct kernel... forgot I was on EFI and had to "cp /boot/vmlinuz* /boot/efi/boot/bootx64.efi" and now it all works fine.

I have one small issue though... I can't figure out how to get my FN keys to work... I have ASUS Laptop Extras enabled in the kernel, tried it as both a module and built-in, makes no differe.nce. I tried the ASUS WMI drivers as well, no difference.

The F1-F12 keys work on their own. If I start Xev I can see the key-events come through just fine for the F1-F12 keys without the FN key and I can see different key-events when I hold the FN key down where it says stuff like XF86Sleep for FN ct+ F1.

Without the ASUS WMI drivers the backlight keys don't produce an event, but with ASUS WMI all the keys provide the correct event, but nothing makes it actually work.

McPuffin,

You should start a new topic for a new problem. That way it will appear in the unanswered topics search.
