NB: I have changed the title the better to reflect what was actually going on and note that the issue is resolved.

just emerged world, which declined to update nvidia-drivers to 358 (since nvidia-settings requires a matching version, and it's still at 355). However, now Xorg.0.log shows this:

This only started happening yesterday, after I updated world to the newest xorg-server in the tree. Did I miss something? Is there some other package I need to (re-)update? Thanks for the help.

Cheers,

Then try to reinstall the nvidia driver.

you should first try this:
Quote:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
[ 62750.606] (EE) NVIDIA(0): log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
[ 62750.606] (EE) NVIDIA(0): server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module. If
[ 62750.606] (EE) NVIDIA(0): you continue to encounter problems, Please try
[ 62750.606] (EE) NVIDIA(0): reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.

i guess the nividia-binary-driver (which provides the glx-module) installs some files for the xorg-server which got lost in the update.
GOOD LUCK!

Hi,

already reinstalled nvidia-drivers before posting. Didn't help :(

I'm using nvidia-drivers-355*, compiling from source. How is the binary driver any different? Don't both install a binary blob into the modules directory?

In any case, the module is also to be found at /usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/libglx.so (I think that's the path; I'm not at my desktop atm).

So, how can I debug this better?

Cheers,

EE

What I saw as i moved my box. from legacy nvidia 9800m gts cards to my new box with 660m gtx.
nvidia-settings do not need to have the same version as the binary blob to work.
Just installing x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-355.11-r2 worked with 340.58.X.x of nvida-setttings.
As general rule of dumb, reinstall the nvidia-drivers, and unload the existing loaded nvidia-driver. Than reload the nvidia-drivers. (man rmmod afaik)

And sometimes there are file collisions for te binary blob / settings. I am not sure if I had that recently, but when i see something related to nvidia binary blob, I just rm those files and install the binary blob again. Because most of the times these are lint, and portage won*t install files when file collision occurs (means when portage finds file and has to overwrite them).

I think you forgot to unload the already loaded nvidia.ko module probably. than you need to insmod the newly build module or the x-server does the jobs for you usually.

emerging nvidia-drivers also involved modprobe -r and then re-modprobing the nvidia kernel module. Didn't help. So far as I can tell, nvidia-settings has a hard version dependency on the 355 meta, and portage refuses to emerge 358 if -settings-355 is installed.

what next?

In my expierence, on asus g70sg, laptop, for over 6 years, reinstalling nvidia-drivers never ever solved the issue with removing the nvidia blob on my asus notebook.

Rebooting did the job, yes. (personally i prefer to reboot the box, so i see that the configs / modules works with every new reboot / just a verification that it works and no surprise the next time)
or using rmmod by hand in the /lib/modules/kernel/video directory

But up to you, see it as my expierence (applies to up to 340 verison of nvidia-drivers, thats the legacy one) and my opinion.

--

whats next

a) unmerge nvidia-settings
b) stay at 355 and leave it as that until the ebuild for nvidia-settings show up (means maybe hardmasking the new nvidia-drivers) depends if you really need it
c) check if bugs.gentoo.org or somewhere else has newer nvidia-settings

unmerged nvidia-settings, emerged nvidia-drivers-358.09, rebooted into the new driver. Still no dice: the GLX module fails to load, though the nvidia driver is the active video module in the kernel and being used by the X server.

Is there any way to dig out exactly why the nvidia GLX module is failing to load? The logs are pretty scanty.

I have libglx.so in:
/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/extensions ( from nvidia-drivers)
and
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions ( from xorg-server )

u can go to those dirs and check:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ldd libglx.so

And if u see something not found then try recompiling package which should own that file.
And also check if all libglx.so links to other nvidia files with the same version.
So if u have 358 driver and some links to 355 remove it manually.
If somehow u have libglx.so in another dirs, probaly rename or remove it.

EDIT: if everything is all right then maybe just try setting it again:
eselect opengl list
and
eselect oepngl set XX ( nvidia)

Btw there is kms driver for nvidia in 358 but dunno how to enable it ...

I only have libglx in /usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/extensions.

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ldd libglx.so returns:
Code:
extensions # LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ldd libglx.so
        linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007ffda9310000)
        libnvidia-tls.so.358.09 => /usr/lib64/libnvidia-tls.so.358.09 (0x00007ff584040000)
        libnvidia-glcore.so.358.09 => /usr/lib64/libnvidia-glcore.so.358.09 (0x00007ff5823de000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x00007ff582049000)
        libdl.so.2 => /lib64/libdl.so.2 (0x00007ff581e45000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib64/libm.so.6 (0x00007ff581b44000)
        /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x000055ae3fe55000)

So it found everything, yes?

Here's another wrinkle: I also cannot, at the moment, update mesa. The latest version, if the opencl useflag is set, requires libclc, which does not compile on my machine. (See this bug).

Also, I tried downgrading xorg-server, also without success. Here's the list of all the packages I've updated since Oct 4, when I last had this working:

See anything there that might help?

Nothing suspicious in emerged packages, except gentoo sources.
/usr/src/linux -> points to current kernel, right ? Then it should be ok

To some extra info add Option "ModeDebug" "true"
to Section "Device" with nvidia

Then check /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Mine looks like this ( about loading libglx.so)

[ 709.880] (II) LoadModule: "glx"
[ 709.888] (II) Loading /usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/extensions/libglx.so
[ 709.974] (II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
[ 709.974] compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
[ 709.974] Module class: X.Org Server Extension
[ 709.974] (II) NVIDIA GLX Module 358.09 Wed Oct 7 19:29:18 PDT 2015

( dunno what is 4.0.2, im using kernel 4.1.0-pf1)

Adding 'Option "ModeDebug" "true"' to my xorg.conf file provided me with no additional information about the GLX module (besides what I already posted above). The only other thing that seems to have failed was:

Code:
[   570.259] (II) NVIDIA(0): ACPI: failed to connect to the ACPI event daemon; the daemon
[   570.259] (II) NVIDIA(0):     may not be running or the "AcpidSocketPath" X
[   570.259] (II) NVIDIA(0):     configuration option may not be set correctly.  When the
[   570.259] (II) NVIDIA(0):     ACPI event daemon is available, the NVIDIA X driver will
[   570.259] (II) NVIDIA(0):     try to use it to receive ACPI event notifications.  For
[   570.259] (II) NVIDIA(0):     details, please see the "ConnectToAcpid" and
[   570.259] (II) NVIDIA(0):     "AcpidSocketPath" X configuration options in Appendix B: X
[   570.259] (II) NVIDIA(0):     Config Options in the README.
[   570.294] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "DFP-1:nvidia-auto-select"
[   570.347] (==) NVIDIA(0): Disabling shared memory pixmaps
[   570.347] (==) NVIDIA(0): Backing store enabled
[   570.347] (==) NVIDIA(0): Silken mouse enabled
[   570.348] (==) NVIDIA(0): DPMS enabled
[   570.348] (II) Loading sub module "dri2"
[   570.348] (II) LoadModule: "dri2"
[   570.348] (II) Module "dri2" already built-in
[   570.348] (II) NVIDIA(0): The X server will not be able to send the VDPAU driver name to
[   570.348] (II) NVIDIA(0):     libvdpau.
[   570.348] (--) RandR disabled
The only other information I got was a listing of available and rejected video modes. Since this is an EDID monitor, that meant one mode added to the pool, and all the rest rejected.

But this still doesn't tell me anything about the GLX module. Is there any other option to add to xorg.conf to debug the GLX module itself?

Cheers,

EE

Provide a real log instead of your two cut versions, we don't know what really is going on or if you are filtering out them badly.

So it looks like u have enabled CONFIG_DRM in kernel ?
If yes disable it.

Or there is strange ModulePath in your log:
"/usr/lib32/xorg/modules,/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia,/usr/lib64/xorg/modules,/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/extensions"

And I have: ModulePath set to "/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia,/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
Maybe it tries to use some module from lib32 ?

So just try adding that ModulePath to xorg.conf

Section "Files"
ModulePath "/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia,/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
EndSection

and check log if it's set (Im not sure if syntax is correct, but should be ok)

You can check also that bug https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=534128
maybe in comments there is something more useful (Im too lazy to read it all)

As you can see from the log:

Code:
[ 64341.047] (==) FontPath set to:
        /usr/share/fonts/misc/
[ 64341.047] (**) ModulePath set to "/usr/lib32/xorg/modules,/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia,/usr/lib64/xorg/modules,/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/extensions"
[ 64341.047] (II) The server relies on udev to provide the list of input devices.
        If no devices become available, reconfigure udev or disable AutoAddDevices.
[ 64341.048] (II) Loader magic: 0x7ebb60

The ModulePath already includes those two directories, and they are correctly set.

I'm not sure that bug is relevant: as the poster says in Comment #1, the GLX module is being loaded. In my case, it's failing to load entirely. Also, only my file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20opengl.conf has a "ModulePath" section under "Files" (which appears to have been the base problem there).

Anything else I might check? Is there a way to pseudo-load the GLX module to get debug output when it fails?

Cheers,

EE

So maybe most obvious answer, maybe xorg doesnt even try to load glx at all.

Just add this to xorg.conf?

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

I would look and remove that module path to /usr/lib32, first because i don't see why you have this one, second as xorg should look at your native 64bits modules first, than for 32bits.

That's a bad idea to suppose something that doesn't exists, exists.
You have no error message and no way to debug the module, because xorg doesn't load the module at all. No loading, no success and no error. Nothing.

You should look at why xorg couldn't find or load it.
For me i would look at:
- clearing ModulePath, because no matter how i think about it, that /usr/lib32 in it looks too weird for me
- eselect opengl set the opengl to use by using a symlink, libglx.so is pointing to the glx version to use, either xorg or nvidia, and with the version info
Code:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root      11  4 juin  02:31 libglx.so -> libglx.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root      16  4 juin  02:31 libglx.so.1 -> libglx.so.352.09
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 8241344  4 juin  02:31 libglx.so.352.09

Did you check that the symlink is valid (pointing to wrong file or pointing to a dead file?)

removed the /usr/lib32/ path from ModulePath. /usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/extensions looks like this:

Code:
 /usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/extensions $ ls -l
total 11624
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root       11 18. Okt 19:37 libglx.so -> libglx.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root       16 18. Okt 19:37 libglx.so.1 -> libglx.so.358.09
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 11886280 18. Okt 19:37 libglx.so.358.09
So, the links are correct, yes?

My xorg.conf looks like this:

Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "Nvidia Card"
    Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

#Try manually adding glx

Section "Module"
   Load   "glx"
EndSection

#Added for conky - needs DBE

Section "Module"
   Load   "dbe"
EndSection
I added in the line about the glx module later, but it doesn't seem to have helped in any way. the only files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ are:

Code:
$ ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
11-inputs.conf  12-keyboard.conf  20opengl.conf
inputs and keyboard do nothing except set my mouse and keyboard settings, respectively. opengl contains nothing but the ModulePath listing, as follows:
Code:
Section "Files"
        ModulePath "/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia"
        ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
        ModulePath "/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/extensions"
EndSection

What I meant by "pseudo load" is to try attempting manually loading the glx module without having to re-start the X server, and to try to get some debugging output. The only thing Xorg.0.log says is that it "failed to load" the module, without saying why.

eselect has always shown that the nvidia module is selected for opengl. I even set it manually (back to the xorg one and then back to nvidia) a couple times to try forcing it. No change.

What next?

Cheers,

EE

Im pretty out of ideas.
My guess might be:

1) why u dont have /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so which should belong to xorg-server?

Mine xorg-server uses: glamor ipv6 nptl suid udev xnest xorg -dmx -doc -kdrive -libressl -minimal -selinux -static-libs -systemd -tslib -unwind -wayland -xephyr -xvfb

Do u have VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia" in make.conf ?

2) Have u tried emerge --update --deep world ?

U should try anyway to check if something is upgradeable, might be not updated as it should.
U can check it with:
EIX_LIMIT_COMPACT=0 eix -cu --only-names

and see which packages from x11-* are not upgraded.

3) fill the bug ?

EDIT
4) maybe just downgrade kernel, u updated to 4.2.3 in the same time when updated xorg-server, if Im right

Have you tried to switch to X and back to nvidia opengl?
