|
I synchronized my laptop today and attempted to update and noticed that despite me running kernel 3.18.16, it wants to bring in 3.14.48. Why? It doesn't appear to be a dependency and I only have my kernel installed. I will go to kernel 4 once all the bugs (mainly ALSA bugs for my systems) are fixed.
Code: |
~ $ sudo emerge -avuND --tree --with-bdeps=y @world
These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

As for kernels...
Code: |
~ $ sudo eselect kernel list
Available kernel symlink targets:
[1] linux-3.18.16-gentoo *
???@??? ~ $
|
So why is it pulling 3.14? _________________ Ever picture systemd as what runs "The Borg"? |

linux-3.18.16-gentoo has been removed from the tree and presently linux-3.14.48-gentoo is the latest stable kernel 3.
Did you block updating to the EOLd 4.0.5? |

Yes, because kernel 4 and ALSA are borked. If I use 4.0.5, I get no sound from my laptop, only external speakers, which I don't carry with me. 3.18.16 was supposed to be an LTS kernel unless I am mistaken. I did not think 3.14 would last beyond next year. This makes things impossible for me.
*UPDATE*
Yes, 3.18 will outlive 3.14, so why was it removed before 3.14? This seems kind of backwards.

No, you can just unmask the latest 3.18.22 gentoo-sources................
Again, there's a disconnect between Upstream and Gentoo stable, we had that topic before.
@tw04l124: vanilla-sources are not stabilised at all. |

I had masked >=sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.0. So why isn't 3.18.22 an option? Unstable?
*UPDATE*
Yeah, I see that. I am assuming people are still filing bug reports on it, which makes me nervous. 3.18.16 was stable. Now the latest stable below 4 is 3.14, a step backwards. I am going to stick with 3.18.16 for now and think about this for a bit. I am not wanting to spend ages working on finding a good kernel which works with my hardware when I know this one works. This could be an issue for people with nVidia cards for sure though. Luckily the last kernel the regular nVidia drivers seem to work with is 3.14! Not sure about the cutting-edge cards though. _________________ Ever picture systemd as what runs "The Borg"? |

No, nothing that wouldn't be present in 3.18.16 already. https://bugs.gentoo.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=gentoo-sources-3.18&list_id=2932832
Most likely 3.18 just is not stabilised anymore, Gentoo has moved on to 4.x. It is really simple, don't call it 'unstable', but rather 'not stabilised'. |

I am waiting for the next stable 4.x kernel (OK, not unstable, but the next kernel I don't have to unmask due to bug reports or whatever) so I can see if ALSA works with it then. Once ALSA works I do not believe I will have an issue with it. Somebody told me that kernel 4 had issues with ext4. Can anybody comment on that? _________________ Ever picture systemd as what runs "The Borg"? |

I've been using current stable kernel 4.0.5 on my main machines since June, and haven't experienced any issues at all fwiiw. |

There is no reason you have to update a kernel just because portage pulled in a new one. If you are happy with your current one just keep using it. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order.
Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box. |

Doc, I tend to pull in newer kernels for security updates and such. It isn't that my old kernel was bad, I just like the security updates I get. _________________ Ever picture systemd as what runs "The Borg"? |
