if I run gedit(even as root) I get
Code:
Segmentation Fault

the only info I can find is in dmesg

Code:
gedit[32508]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f99fd0e4d9f sp 00007ffd3c9a5608 error 4 in libc-2.20.so[7f99fd059000+18c000]

the system is up to date and the last major thing I did was upgrade to kernel 4.0.5-gentoo. but I am pretty sure gedit was working immediately after a reboot.

Everything else seems to be working, nothing waiting to be emerged or blocked.
Code:
emerge --sync && emerge --pretend --update --deep world
emerge -avDNut world
revdep-rebuild
emerge @preserved-rebuild

Any ideas or where I can check?

Any special cflags? what is your -march ? What architecture is your kernel compiled to?

Is your machine overheating due to dust accumulation?

AMD 64

everything else is working (though I have not got around to installing the ATI binary blobs so no accelerated GFX)

cflags
Code:
CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe"

-march
not sure where to check this, sorry

machine runs quite cool.

I have been re emeging gedit along with its dependancies but still just seg fault.

Code:
emerge -av introspection
emerge -av glib
emerge -av gobject-introspection-common gobject-introspection
emerge -av gedit

What else can I do to try and get more information about why this is happening?

I did note that I had not setup the ATI graphics and now I have done that gedit works fine.

Strange as gedit does not really do any 3D or high performance GFX.

Currently installing ATI GFX drivers for 64bit involves

adding
Code:
=x11-drivers/ati-drivers-15.9-r1 ~amd64

to
Code:
/etc/portage/package.accept_keywords

running
Code:
emerge -av ati-drivers
to get the manual download locations

one you can do from the command line
Code:
wget http://developer.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/xvba-sdk-0.74-404001.tar.gz

the other you must visit the site (and select 64 bit)
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/

Although not noted, both of these files must be moved to
Code:
/usr/portage/distfiles/

then
Code:
emerge -av ati-drivers

will work and a reboot seals the deal.
