I want to use mythtv to make my computer a pvr. The problem is that my tv tuner isn't up to the task. It doesn't have a a hardware encoder, so my computer runs real slow when it's encoding. Also, the tv in my house is messed up, so it can't get the bad chanels. (they also look like ass on a real tv, but at least they come through). What card do I want? I don't need digital. _________________ Aim:gsfgf0 |

You want a PVR-250 or 350 from Haupagge. They have a hardware mpeg-2 encoder and the 350 even has the according decoder, and tv-out.
You can also go for clones from Yuan (the mpg-600 comes to mind)
All those cards based on the connexant chips cx23415/16 will work great with the IVTV drivers
Image quality is really good, and obviously, the hardware encoder will let your computer do something else when you record tv. |

I saw some of these. So they're good too. _________________ Aim:gsfgf0 |

Yeah, I got an OEM version of the Yuan card, and I'm very satisfied. The card can even work with Haupagge cards firmware.
nonetheless, this japanese website has custom drivers for the yuan card, it's just a tweaked version of the IVTV drivers :

While on the topic of TV tuners, what cheapo ~$50 card would you reccomend.
I really don't need anything but high quality composite capturing.
I would want one that isn't a PITA to get working in gnetoo.
(I basically just want to emerge the drivers, then configure tvtime to use the new card, thenexpect it to work.)
Of course I don't mind a little bit more configuring, as long as it's well documented. |

you can try one of the above on ebay, or get a SAA7134 based card. (drivers and info here)
I do not recommend bt8x8 based cards, they are really easy to install but the quality is not really up to what is available at the same price.
JUST MAKE SURE that you pick a card that HAS working drivers. (i.e. avoid connexant 2388x based cards by all means)
there is no such thing as emerging capture card drivers. Most of the drivers are available in the kernel sources, which you have to configure and compile.
If you prefer newer drivers, the best bet is to fetch them from the bytesex.org site and patch the kernel yourself or compile them as module against your current tree.
It's really not difficult, and most stuff you need you will find right here on those forums, because it has been already discussed extensively.
If some problem arises, I'll be happy to help, but with all the material made available by the gentoo-ers it should be as easy as a walk in the park. |
