Upon login, my kde desktop has only wall paper and panel bar, but all the icons in the desktop, including those in the wallpaper and panel bar, are missing. The Kcrash manager complains that baloo and kde activity manager have crashed. I re-emerged kde-base/baloo and kde-base/kactivities, but the icons in kde desktop are still missing.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Which "kde desktop" are you talking about? KDE4 or plasma5 (AKA KDE5)?
Is the appropriate icon theme installed (kde-plasma/breeze for plasma5, kde-apps/oxygen-icons for kde4)?
Have you selected a "supported" icon theme in systemsettings?

// edit:
Oh, kde-base/baloo suggests you are still running kde4. But probably you just re-emerged the wrong one ;)

I've seen strange behavior like you are seeing sometimes when switching qt versions. Is there no new errors in the logs about segmentation faults or crashes? You might try something like 'emerge -e world'. It will take forever and re-emerge everything but should solve it completely if that is the problem. A more efficient way would be to just rebuild the packages which rely on qt packages but I'll leave that to you to figure out how to do best.

Yes, it's KDE4. Right now I am just going through the emerge -uND world as there seems no clues as to which particular kde packages need update or rebuild.

P.S. Upon completion of all emerges, the reported KDE4 problems were all gone. Thanks everyone.
