Hi,

I just wanted to put some movie for kids, but as I never used dvd in my laptop, I have no experience in this area. I use KDE and when I click on [Available Device] in Device Nottifer I have 7 action (rip, open folder, download, etc).

[1] I can play it by VLC - but video is choppy every 5-7 sec.
[2] When I click Play DVD with Kaffeine - it says read error from: ///dev/sr0 (Kaffeine should manage better with DVD's than VLC)
[3] I have no option in Device Nottifer to play it by eg. Dragon Player or Mplayer
[4] Any other ideas?

I can manage smoothly with FullHD in Kdenlive. I have Intel i5 + 8GB ram + Nvidia 1GB ram - is it that not enough to play old fashion DVD? My 5$ ebay player can do this. I thinks there is a problem with VLC, which in my opinion is much worse than eg. mplayer. Maybe there is a problem with DVD player and some kind of buffor?

okay.

direct rending works right?

than you may focus on those useflags for the media players.

afaik ffmpeg vs libav (whatever you prefer)

vdpau useflag enabled? and used ?

Quote:
DVD support

If you have a DVD-ROM or DVD-RW in your computer, then make sure to add these flags: a52 dts dvd.

Most DVDs use AC3 audio (Dolby Digitial), and playback support is provided by liba52. Some DVDs will also provide DTS as well, but is not as common.

Alternately, use the follow recommendation to enable menu navigation support: http://wonkabar.org/archives/405

http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/MPlayer
Please check if you have all those useflags enabled from this page.

also you may install ufed and go through the full list and see if you miss something...

May i ask you to provide us with the output of

cvlc (than options needed to play that dvd). you may see some errors or warnings... or how it is decoded.

1. Are you using a custom kernel or genkernel?
2. With VLC try playing the DVD then go to tools -> codec information and report what it says.
3. With VLC go to tools -> messages and change verbosity to warning and try playing again. Anything suspicious showing?

With those specs I don't think vdpau is required (though it may not hurt). I have an old core 2 quad and I'm able to play DVDs without vdpau.

is the ac3 related useflag set? for the packages needed for playback?

did you try any other dvd? or just always the same disc?

That must imply a jackified player playing an AC3 source, must provide to jack as many audio outputs than audio streams in the AC3 stream. It is up to the user to connect them to another software or to the hardware. I also don't think this will crash jack. If I can find some AC3 source, I can try it. --DominiqueMichel (talk) 16:49, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Well I just assume that this ac3 thing has several audio streams and therefore you need pulseaudio probably.
Do you use pulseaudio?
