Strange. One of the newer releases of Firefox in Portage stopped checking spelling in textboxes and no longer underlines misspelled words. Happened on more than one of my boxes. Anyone happen to know what happened?

If there was a linguas_en_US USE flag, I'd use it, but there doesn't seem to exist one...

I have not tried firefox-bin, that might be interesting.

Oh... and "Check My Spelling as I type" is still checked in preferences...

SOLVED: FIX: Rightclick in text box you expected spell check, and turn it off, turn it back on after making sure you have the right language pack installed.

It's still working here (40.0.2) right now on the forum except I have to click on the text area (give it focus) before it works.

I wish there were a en_us linguas as well. I'm using en_GB. It's a little weird sometimes with the British English. :) er, wait, I just figured that out I think. I had the US English dictionary installed already and I simply changed 'spellchecker.dictionary' to 'en_US' in about:config. Now I can write 'color' again without getting that annoying little red line informing me that I am wrong. :)

Anyway maybe also check around in about:config too.

I have:

layout.spellcheckDefault 2
services.sync.prefs.sync.layout.spellcheckDefault true
services.sync.prefs.sync.spellchecker.dictionary true
spellchecker.dictionary en-US
spellchecker.dictionary_path /usr/share/myspell

You just forgot to turn it on. This bites me whenever I start a new Firefox and think "my spelling is really good today!"

Click on the text box and you can turn on spell check and select your dictionary if you don't want to spell things properly. About:config shouldn't be needed for that.

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.

ahh there we go, had to turn it off, and then turn it back on (??!)
I guess this is better now, selecting en_US now, I had en_GB or something as default before (it was enabled automatically in previous versions) and I got a little weirded by colourful defence.

Thanks.
