I noticed that I have 3 versions of net-libs/webkit-gtk.
Compiling one costs me something like 8 hours.
I have versions 2.4.9, 2.4.9-r200 and 2.6.6 installed. Why is this and can I change something so only one version is needed? |

Due to the nature of the incompatibilities, if you need all three, you need all three.
Slot 2 is pure gtk2/webkit1 API, slot 3 is the transition - it has both webkit1 and webkit2 API and adds gtk3 support, slot 4 has only webkit2 API (though slightly modified in a few places) and uses gtk2 only for plugin support.
Slot 3 should be (mostly) gone in 6-9 months, as most of those apps belong to active Gnome3 and are actively ported to slot 4, slot 2 is a different matter, as there the whole app needs porting to gtk3 (gimp help is an example here - till gimp gets ported to gtk3, it's stuck on that slot and port is difficult as it's quite low on devs, especially GUI devs). |
