PostPosted: Sun Jan 17, 2016 3:45 pm    Post subject: fresh install cannot login as user to Gnome3 "oh, no&qu Reply with quote

I installed Gentoo just now with systemd and gnome3/nvidia/uefi/. I get the login screen and I can choose my username and typ in my password, but then I get the "oh, no" screen and return to the login screen.
I can login as root.
I do not have a clue where to look. Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Update:
here is the output from journactl:

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/PulseAudio#Configuration
or
I have been using apulse (for skype) instead of puleaudio and xfce4 instead of gnome3 to avoid this sort of thing. Originally went systemd on this machine to see what it was and to satisfy a desire to keep gnome. gave up gnome when it went heavily into being a lesser form of win 8.

Hey Donahue, thanks for replying.
I think I give up on Gentoo, Gnome and systemd. It is simply causing too many headaches.
Which way is the best to go from here? If I choose to use Xfce: Should I better stick with systemd? Or fresh install and go for openrc?

did you check your system against https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/PulseAudio#Configuration it sounded like that should be the fix. Seems like you are almost complete

if you do wish to change your profile first step is eselect profile set whatever followed by emerge -uND world

you do not need to reinstall to go to openrc, compile a kernel with
Quote:

[*] Built-in kernel command line
(root=PARTUUID=yourpartuuid ro loglevel=3) Built-in kernel command line
[*] Built-in command line overrides boot loader arguments
defaults to openrc

I don't think there is any evidence here that is caused by anything related to pulseaudio, systemd or whatever.
I'd rather suspect something not working for graphics acceleration, that is, /usr/libexec/gnome-session-check-accelerated returning a failure exit code.
Maybe a quick test from console, not gdm, could reveal the issue better. Or a better journalctl check. Your journalctl invocation seems to have only a few lines from gdm-x-session, which seems rather wrong.
Is a concrete
Code:
journalctl /usr/libexec/gdm-x-session

showing so few also? (X messages probably get logged under that only under gdm though)

No, I don't see anything wrong in there.
Maybe a full user log with
Code:
journalctl -b _SYSTEMD_UNIT=session-1.scope

or
Code:
journalctl -b /usr/libexec/gnome-session-binary

or something like that has some information.
Keep in mind the log can be large and the new stuff is at the end (unless -r flag is passed to reverse it). Though the -b option to limit the logs to current boot should make it much smaller amount.
