I do wonder, if emerge is designed to work fine w/o --deep as along after each "emerge -C <foo>" an "emerge -uD @world" is run and after a USE change in make.conf an "emerge --deep --new-use --changed-use @world" ?

--deep is only used for updates. Emerging a new package never needs --deep.

After "emerge -C <foo>" you might want to run "emerge --depclean -a".
