"Behind?" As in, what is the meaning of them? "Threshold" symbolized getting Windows 10 out to as many people as possible and getting them over that "threshold" so that the company only has to maintain one version of Windows. Once they're on the stable Windows 10 branch, they just get pushed weekly patches and bi-annual updates. "Redstone" is taken from Minecraft and I have no idea what it symbolizes.

Why are there 18 pages of discussions on Windows 10?

Paranoia
To paraphrase Kissinger, even a paranoid can have Windows updates.

I was after the meaning of the codewords, which you refuse to give me, not the definition of the actual words. I guess your "threshold" is old shit, and "redstone" is after the "anniversary update"? Since the number is higher, I assume so, which puts me on the old shit still.

Threshold was the initial release. Redstone is the just-released Anniversary Update.

Erm. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I like me OS to manage system resources, not arse about with social media.

JB's looking at Mint - that's the hip distro these days right ?

Yeah, Gentoo is too diverse - pointing everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Lost it's identity. But Mint in it's 18th gen has been OK for me....for a year.

EDIT: BTW, Who can 'run' a window? Even in plural.

I can't decide what is worse, the connections, or that content layout (js disabled).

Most of the links are from Microsoft. Maybe not the candy crush saga but rest of them are.

The OS is trying to keep things updated, which is to be expected from a system such as Windows 10. Now have we seen the links a clean Mac OSX tries to connect to?

Just saying...

A digression : I must live in a cave because I don't know since when URLs are being called "end points". End points of what?

Thank you for volunteering to either run the tests or find such test results and post a link to the results. Remember to post them in a topic dedicated to Mac OS, though linking there from this topic would be advisable.

Yeah, OK I missed Facebook and Twitter but if you have those applications installed it's not unforeseeable that these applications might connect to the internet.

I mean, how do you think the apps work otherwise?

I don't have a Mac with me at the moment but I do remember seeing a bunch of connections going out. I'll post when I have a Mac.

Most of those aren't for OS updates.

Until I recently made the move back to Gentoo, I was running WinX since the Technical Preview 2. I easily learned a few things:

1) Always turn off all of the telemetry.

2) Always uninstall any of the games that came installed with a clean install.

3) Always uninstall any of the apps that came with it that I would not use (read:Skype, weather, news, etc.)

4) Always keeps your data files off the system drive.

WRT 4, I actually used SysPrep to engineer a Windows install that put the OS and programs on my main SSD, and my \Users| tree onto a separate SSD, and then I manually moved the existing (empty upon clean install) 'special' folders to other drives (Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, and Videos) so that I cold more easily cleanly reinstall (and so that I could back those drives up with a different (incremental) scheme.

Of course, I was also enrolled in their Insider Preview program, so there were times I was getting a new build every week....thankfully those updates (usually) did not alter my telemetry-blocking settings nor re-install programs I had previously removed if I took them the normal OTA (well, Over the Internet, anyway) method.

Once I get this desktop build all situation, I'll probably throw it into a KVM for reference - I still support clients running Windows.

Finding everything to turn off and uninstall is not a trivial task.

I'd have been OK with a "power user mode." But I'm also OK with their new direction, because anydaynow I'll buy more RAM and an SSD to finally leave Windows. Maybe I'll do that research this weekend.

I put Windows 10 on a separate drive for work just now. Compared to Fedora 27, it's total shit. HDD won't stop running, volume slider just stopped coming up when I clicked the speaker... Honestly, the initial release of Windows 10 was far superior in terms of reliability.

The last 'regular' release (1803) was pure shit. Better to grab the Fall Creators Update if you gotta have it and turn off Windows Update (or else keep setting it to delay updates by 2 weeks).

Best - throw it in a VM, disable networking, set up what you need and make a checkpoint.

Win10 is very good because:
- it prevents systemd expansion into linux apps ( otherwise systemd would try some apps to depend on it, but bc best apps are on windows also it can't do it easily)
- it has superior Visual Studio, under it it parses whole my C++ project with tons of deps in about 3-4 secs, when under linux under Kdevelop is fastest and it parses 10-15 secs
- games are not buggy - some games love crashing in the same point (I'm looking at you CIvilziation V/VI linux crap versions), there are many linux specific bugs, bc they were compiled with another compiler and devs dont give a fuck about linux.
- it has superior GeForce Experience which tunes games very awesome - dunno what it does, maybe special firmware is set for each games also, but if I copy the same game setting to linux it will behave very poor and uglier.
- in terms of features its always at least 5 years ahead of linux

Windows sucks because:
- Another update might force u to reinstall windows (A first u will waste many hours to fix, at end u give up) - even if u pick keep program data, good luck with reinstalling all those Visual Studios and Office - nightmare.

For telemetry there are 1 click apps - to remove everything along with ms games ... but I think it's why my w10 failed to update - itcould be MS way respond for disabling telemtry :D
