Just out of curiosity: Is anyone running a *kit-free kde plasma5/framework5 under gentoo?
Is it even possible?

Regards, Gatsby

I ran a kit-free system for a short while with plasma applications from the kde overlay, before reverting to KDE 4.14 for its greater reliability and complete features. I can't answer many questions about the kit-free plasma system because it's gone. I only ran kde applications, the desktop environment was either fluxbox or a simple lxqt with kwin as window manager. One interesting feature of that system is that it was pure qt5, qt4 was not installed. I do have a few notes:

In make.conf
Code:

USE="$USE -avahi -zeroconf"
USE="$USE -bluray"
USE="$USE -consolekit"
USE="$USE -dbus"
USE="$USE -gconf"
USE="$USE -gnome"
USE="$USE -ipod"
USE="$USE -kde"
USE="$USE -kdepim"
USE="$USE -kontact"
USE="$USE -ldap"
USE="$USE -libnotify"
USE="$USE -libsamplerate"
USE="$USE -mtp"
USE="$USE -mysql"
USE="$USE -nepomuk"
USE="$USE -networkmanager"
USE="$USE -policykit"
USE="$USE -pulseaudio"
USE="$USE -qt4"
USE="$USE -raw"
USE="$USE -semantic-desktop"
USE="$USE -soprano"
USE="$USE -startup-notification"
USE="$USE -udisks"
USE="$USE -upower"

The world contained (amongst many other things):
Code:

kde-apps/cantor:5
kde-apps/dolphin-plugins:5
kde-apps/dolphin:5
kde-apps/gwenview:5
kde-apps/kate
kde-apps/konsole
kde-apps/okular:5
kde-plasma/breeze
kde-plasma/kfilemetadata
kde-plasma/kwin
kde-plasma/oxygen
kde-plasma/plasma-workspace-wallpapers
kde-plasma/systemsettings
app-cdr/k3b:5
app-editors/kile:5
lxqt-base/lxqt-meta
mail-client/thunderbird
virtual/jdk
www-client/firefox
www-client/google-chrome
x11-themes/slim-themes
x11-wm/fluxbox

I checked my full plasma 5 desktop install, also now gone, but see that there I did allow consolekit and dbus into the system. I have no real need to exclude consolekit, policykit, or dbus but it is interesting to be able in Gentoo (actually I'm running Funtoo) to experiment with the dependencies and learn about the features (performance and security) of simplified systems. My kit-free, avahi-free, pulseaudio-free, dbus-free, simplified systems have shown remarkably good responsiveness. I can't say that the kits or dbus or pulseaudio or avahi add anything to my system that I need or want. In general in all of my installs of Funtoo or FreeBSD I am able to run a very nice complete KDE desktop without avahi or pulseaudio and I disable dbus and notifications everywhere that they are optional.
