Hello everyone,
First of all, I want you to know that I'm fairly new. I've been religiously following this tutorial and when I get to the boot part (bottom of the page), I'm getting stuck with this message :
Code: | !! Media not found
!! Could not find CD to boot, something else needed!
>> Determining root device...
!! Could not find the root block device in .
!! Please specify another value or:
!! - press Enter for the same
!! - type "shell" for a shell
!! - type "q" to skip...
root block device() :: |
I've seen this error a lot on the forums and either it doesn't correspond entirely to what I have or people just recommend using SystemRescueCD.
The reasons I'm using this tutorial and want to stick with it is because I have a rather basic understanding of Linux at the moment and also because I'm interested in the "LUKS-LVM Filesystem and Boot USB Key" part.
The machine I'm trying to install Gentoo on is a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2nd Gen, therefore I have no CD/DVD Drive.
- I currently have Ubuntu 14.04 installed on it.
- I did put the boot on Legacy Only mode with CSM Support enabled in the BIOS.
- I checked /etc/fstab with the shell and this is what I have :
Code: | /dev/ram0 / ext2 defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 |
I have no idea what else you might need to be able to understand the situation. Please let me know if you need more informations.
I guess those are my questions :
- Do I have to use SystemRescueCD or is there a workaround for this issue so I'm able to continue to follow the tutorial?
- If there is none, I found this other tutorial but it is kind of 'old' already (2011). If it's not too much to ask, could you tell me if it seems accurate ?
Thank you in advance for your help.

The kernel on the gentoo live cd does not contain the right USB driver for the CD ROM drive.
Try to use the Systemrescuecd. |
