Create new banner template using CUPS for SUSE linux printer

  • Quote

Post by quocnguyen0607 » Mon Jul 13, 2015 6:37 pm

I am currently setting the new printer server using CUPS for the SUSE 12 Linux virtual machine. I am not sure how to create the banner template from scratch and the steps to verify it.
How to edit the configuration file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and create the new templates to save in /usr/share/cups/banners. Right now I have no files in banner folder yet.
Your help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
QN

in my gentoo-cupsserver-install 2.0.1-r1 the banner-files reside in

Code: Select all

ls /usr/share/cups/banners/
classified form standard unclassified
confidential secret topsecret/usr/share/cups/banners/
(suse might place them somewhere else but you know what to look for)

the specs for them can be found here:
http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/d ... ION=2.1&Q= and you make the printer use them with the param

Code: Select all

JobSheets <banner-pre> <banner-post>
in /etc/cups/printers.conf inside the printer-section. (you can also add them via the web-if but you have to restart cupsd (and maybe also delete the files in /var/cache/cups/ )).

banner-pre/post ist the filename w/out path of the banner to be inserted before or after the printjob; use none for no banner.
you have to test around a little bit because in my case not all the vars produced something (but then, our printservers are highly customized).
GOOD LUCK!

DawgG,
Yup you were right. I finally found and tested the banner templates that I have created by my own.
I am sharing the following steps for what I have done to get it work.
First create text files to install into the /usr/share/cups/banners (you should create the "banners" directory, if it was not yet created). We need this directory to be created inside the share directory. Then change the permission to be readable for these banner files. After that we modify the configuration file /etc/cups/printers.conf, modify the selections for attribute "job-sheet" to be assigned as the correct names of your template files that you have created in banners directory (replace the default values of "none" "none" currently assigned by your new template banner files). Then do restart the cups again (systemctl restart cups) for the updated configuration to be executed/active. Then go to the CUPS global GUI URI to verify options for banners under administration tab. You will see the banner templates being updated in pull-down menu for you to select.

Again, thanks for your help, DawgG.

PS: I still want to know how you customize the layouts of your selected parameters in your banner templates. Since the option was just "Show" but not giving you enough tool for creating the layout of them. Please feel free to add your inputs. Appreciate it for all your questions/comments.

i don't think you can do much there - i once played around al little bit trying to add a picture but since it did not work and really wasn't important i gave up quickly. you might be able to do sth. if you really dig into the cups-specs or the "CUPS banner file format (application/vnd.cups-banner)"
GOOD LUCK!
