I have some issues with k3b, see my other k3b reltated bugs or posts

I could not burn an audio cd wiht CDRW on this box. But I am able to burn an audio cd only as user root with CDR media. Also the empty CDRW media is detected correct in info media tab or what its called.

So i fired up my second gentoo box and started linux mint there. During upgrade of linux mint linux mint destroyed my gentoo boot entry, but whatever.

Fact is: Updated linux mint on my second gentoo box can burn the same CDRW media, which was fresh out of the box, which did not worked in gentoo.
linux mint uses, typed by hand reading my second box:
/usr/bin/wodim -v gracetime=2 dev=/dev/sr0 speed=10 -tao driveropts=burnfree -multi -xa -tsize=667s -

I only burnt a data cd on linux mint with that CDRW media containging 2 empty folders and the bash from linux mint.

I am also unable to burn data cds on gentoo with CDRW as root.

When I enter that burnt media on my gentoo box, it can not find the Contents, it sounds like in the old days that it spins around and searches for the "sector". after a minute I entered that drive into my second gentoo box (wiht linux mint running) and the disc was recognized in k3b and also a file explorer with the contents instantly opened.

So is the drive dead right? But how comes I could burn CDR without issues and only CDRW causes troubles? I can not believe the drive is dead else I would not be able to do anything. The laser is working so ... I think its more a software issue in the first place.

edit: time to change:

Code:
grep CDR .config
CONFIG_CDROM_PKTCDVD=y
CONFIG_CDROM_PKTCDVD_BUFFERS=8
# CONFIG_CDROM_PKTCDVD_WCACHE is not set

Code:
grep CDR .config
CONFIG_CDROM_PKTCDVD=y
CONFIG_CDROM_PKTCDVD_BUFFERS=64
CONFIG_CDROM_PKTCDVD_WCACHE=y

I will rebuild my kernel now with these settings and see if anything changes

CDRW can be read without problems, just no writing possible

No Idea where I can find the firmwware withjout an EXE installer for that drive. it seems its the oldest firmware ever.

I think my drive is just over 6 Years old and has some issues with CDRW now. Wont Fix. 2 other notebooks with optical drives available in this household! and cdr works as root as of now in k3b.

I thought that i change my drive.

Because its pata and my first notebook which I just do not wanted to use anymore, i had a spare drive lying around

The "very old" transplanted drive into my notebook. I had to move over the mounting brackets and the front cover of my GSA-T40L drive. This drive instanly see my drive and burnt an audio cd with just one mp3 to the same CDRW which failed on the GSA-T40l.
Code:
     *-scsi:2
          physical id: 3
          logical name: scsi4
          capabilities: emulated
        *-cdrom
             description: DVD writer
             product: DVD+-RW ND-6650A
             vendor: _NEC
             physical id: 0.0.0
             bus info: scsi@4:0.0.0
             logical name: /dev/cdrom
             logical name: /dev/sr0
             version: 1.B0
             serial: [
             capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r
             configuration: ansiversion=5 status=open

testing in my car if that disc works. audio disc works fine with one track, CDRW with mp3.

Summary.

The drive GSA-T40L is defunct.

For some reason burning CDRW do not work.
REading CDRW works, burning CR works.

Workaround was to install a much older optical drive which I had lying around.

i disassembled the GSA-T40L drive and checked with a magnifier glass the lens and saw some dust. I swiped with my finger over it and the dust was gone. Probably too much dust over the lens. I reassembled the lens. Well after 6 years there could be too much dust even in a closed drive. I keep the drive. There is a high probability that this dust was responsible for this CDRW issue. I will not make any further tests as the current drive seems to be working.
