Hi,

I'm trying to start kde5 for the first time after a fresh install of plasma-meta-5.3.1-r1. As "startkde" complains about $DISPLAY not set I added "exec startkde" to xinitrc and tried to do startx, but then I get very strange output from startkde which I cannot understand.

Code:
xauth:  file /root/.serverauth.9327 does not exist

X.Org X Server 1.16.4

I noticed 2 things. first thing is the first line where xauth complains about .serverauth.xxxx not beeing found where xxxx changes every time try startx. Second thing is this XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not beeing set and using some default. it seems that the default dir /tmp/runtime-root was created as you can see here

Code:
[root@nuctux ~]$ ls -l /tmp/runtime-root/
total 0
srw------- 1 root root 0 Jun 15 07:43 kdeinit5__0

But for both things I lack any explanation and I did not find any good solution. I tried googling for this XDG_RUNTIME_DIR but did find various posts which are not related to kde5/kf5.

I don't know if they are even relevant, but then I'm asking myself kde5wrapper gets a connection refused exactly from that directory and when on the next line k5wrapper gets even a segfault.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot in advance

I believe the xauth error is normal, and that a .serverauth will be created when xinit is finished starting.

Maybe something in your mount options for /tmp is interfering?

Did you try creating a temporary directory in your home directory for XDG_RUNTIME_DIR?

Code:
mkdir /root/tmp
export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/root/tmp
startkde

Try "touch /root/.serverauth.9327" and restart
