Hi,

After reinstalation of my very old Gentoo I encountered a problem with a mouse. It is not working under X. Keyboard is working fine.

I would be very grateful for any hints. Thanks in advance!

Here's what i think:
for hotplug devices, kernel detect device, kernel add a new entry for device, then udev detect entries change, if need udev load module for it, udev add new input entry for device. Next to that, evdev is just plain stupid, it only look at "input" entries and doesn't really detect any devices, so if an "input" is there, it consider it a device and try use it, if no "input" is there, there's no device.

Your evdev is just not seeing any "input" entry for your mouse, so no mouse for evdev.
Your dmesg is not showing that the "input" entry for your mouse was created, you should had something like:
Code:
[    1.067977] input: PixArt Microsoft USB Optical Mouse as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/usb1/1-4/1-4:1.0/0003:045E:00CB.0001/input/input0

So for me, you have a trouble with udev ; another clue about it, is that udev should load drivers for your hardware that is present, and then load the modules need to handle that hw, but if no hw is present, the module should just not be loaded. And we can see your lsmod is showing hid_cherry, hid_apple that were loaded, as i don't think you have these hw, having these modules load mean they were load by hands, load by modules.autoload.d or by your initram, but not by udev that should had not load these modules as no hw is there for them. While there presence doesn't itself prove udev is not working, it prove udev didn't do that, and assuming udev is working because these modules are loaded could hide udev is in real not working.

What may cause this?
- a recent udev change is not well done: see https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=7762058#7762058
- udev crash (but from your dmesg it looks not)
- udev need CONFIG_FHANDLE, when the kernel add a new entry for a device, udev detect the new entry, without it, udev fails to track the change, so no new device.

Considering it's a common mistake many users do, please check CONFIG_FHANDLE presence. If it is set, then look at udev-init-script version.
(once you fix your issue, this also mean you should really relook at your initram that is loading useless drivers and looks ugly made).
