Hi, is x265 still considered experimental or is it safe to use? That is, does it produce standard-conformant files so that I will not have problems later with playing them back (1.7 with 10bit enabled)?
I encoded some movies I recorded with my Canon EOS 550D, and so far I was very impressed by the compression ratio and the quality achieved. The quality of the recordings is not so great nor are they so important that I want to keep the original files. |

Unfortunately, I cannot really reply to your question, as I am kind of in the same situation. However, the ffmpeg site says: 'Note: libx265 is under heavy development. The API may change.' Therefore, I am hesitant to convert all my videos to H.265 for now. |

If you want to be safe, consider using VP9 instead. The quality difference is negligible, it's more technically mature, and it also doesn't have a looming threat of patent-licensing extortion - though if you used x264 you probably don't care about this last point. |

I do not think you'd have problems to play back x265 content, the problems may be with encoding. OTOH, recoding should be always avoided because we are dealing with lossy codecs, I wouldn't recode any of my MPEG-4 Part 10 (which is AVC or x264) to x265 only because I can. |

So far, I have made very good experiences with 1.8 and 1.9. It is also reasonably fast now. Important videos won't be converted anytime soon though. |
