If I'm going to do an Openbox or LXDE desktop configuration, do I need to set Gnome, KDE, XFCE off in USE flags in early stages of setup /etc/portage/make.conf file?

Not really afaik.

You may speed up the installation when you use less use flags because maybe less packages are needed.
emerge -pv package-atom

you can always change the useflags later.
you may use ufed to determine the flags needed.

Without lxsession you could even avoid pulling in dbus crap.
You only need either of fluxbox or openbox and

Yeah, I'm realizing that now. I messed with the USE flags yesterday, adding the basics of what LXDE has listed, plus a few others I saw or read about in tutorials. It wasn't even a real extensive list. I'm still watching emerge, going for like 3+ hours... Downloading and compiling things like ninja-ide. I just saw dope-wars go by on my screen. That was a fun game back in the day, but it seems a little excessive for a bare-bones set-up. We'll see what happens. If it takes 10 installs, I'll get this thing up and running the way I want. It's all a learning process to a better sculpture in the end.

Thanks, Jay

Thanks for the handy list. If I readjust the USE flags, will it fix this, or should I just hit the power now, and start fresh?
Thanks again,
Jay

Try to go with as few as possible USE flags. Avoid the USE= line in make.conf and do like the example in package.use.

And, avoid redundantly setting USE flags already set by your profile.

$ emerge --info | grep ^USE

I used to run lxde but I've swapped to just running openbox with lxpanel, lxtask and lxrandr.
