Hello everyone,

for me the Icons of Xfce's application menu are to small (16x16).

In Xfce 4.10 the problem was solvable. I used the xfce4-settings-editor and entered in the section "xsettings --> GTK --> IconsSizes" the value "panel-applications-menu=24,24". The effect was that the application menu got 24x24 icons.

After updating to Xfce 4.12 this value is still the same but not recognized anymore meaning that the icon size in the application-menu is now 16x16.

I use the stable amd64-portage-tree. So my Xfce 4.10 version was the actual stable one. To update to Xfce 4.12 I unmasked (~amd64) the following packages which I use currently:

=xfce-base/libxfce4ui-4.12.1-r1
=xfce-base/garcon-0.5.0-r1
=xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.12.1
=xfce-base/xfconf-4.12.0
=xfce-base/xfce4-panel-4.12.0
=xfce-base/xfce4-appfinder-4.12.0-r1
=xfce-base/xfce4-session-4.12.1
=xfce-base/xfce4-settings-4.12.0
=xfce-base/xfwm4-4.12.3
=xfce-base/xfdesktop-4.12.2

Has anyone an idea what to do?

Best regards

XFCE has ditched GTK2 and with it the ability to have menu icons that are actually visible on large high resolution screens. There is a GTK3 option to scale the icons up, but it's poorly implemented, literally scaling up the 16 pixel icons (so they become blurry, pixelated and disgusting) rather than replacing them with the icons of the correct size. At this point the only workaround I know of is...
Code:
emerge xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin

...which doesn't fix the problem (as it's not just the default xfce4-panel application menu that now has uselessly tiny icons...the desktop click menus, for example, have the same issue) but at least provides a nice configurable main menu with a range of icon sizes. If anyone knows of a (supported, i.e. not hacking on the GTK3 code itself) way to get GTK3 to do what GTK2 can do with icons, I'd be glad to know the trick too. For now it looks like neither of the old methods (gtkrc or xfconf) work any more.
