I have a handbook/wiki KDE 4.14.3 install

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE/Plasma_5_upgrade
says

Quote:

Upgrading is fairly simple, although it cannot be coinstalled with Plasma 4 due to upstream design decisions.

does this mean I can simply upgrade using the link's instructions? or do I have to uninstall KDE4 according to

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE/Removal

that link says
Quote:

It is recommended to begin with a clean environment in order to minimize issues, especially when considering one of the following actions:

Downgrading KDE (eg. from snapshots/live ebuilds to the Portage version)
Fully upgrading from KDE 3 to KDE 4
Moving from an old overlay to a different one or the official packages

it doesn't refer to a KDE5 upgrade

Hello, I notice your join date is fairly new. If you are really new to Gentoo (as opposed to just now getting around to register on the forums, etc) it probably isn't a good idea to attempt this right now because it's not something that is officially supported and as such the documentation isn't going to be great and you are probably going to run into some issues. That said this thread has a lot of information:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1015002.html

To answer your questions though you really don't absolutely have to uninstall all of KDE4 using the removal link. It's just that doing so (or at least part of it) will often help you potential resolve blockers and other problems. Also sometimes people run into issues due to the old KDE4 config files although I think now this problem is more rare than in the past.

You can just follow the Plasma upgrade guide but like I said if you are new I highly advise waiting a bit to learn more and in the mean time sticking with more supported packages. It's very likely that you will hit some situation which will end up getting you stuck and you could even hose your install pretty badly which might take you hours or even days to fix.

thanks, and thanks for the link, I'll take your advice

this part of the wiki on system administration is kind of empty and I would like to study up on the topic
