hello,

That's my fist time in this forum because my first gentoo install is less than 24h old.
All is fine but the accents in file or directory name in konqueror, dolphin, thunderbird.
no problem in konsole.
I think that my directory names are coded in iso 8859 15.
I had no pb before with kubuntu.

Code:
locale :
LANG=fr_FR.iso885915@euro
LC_CTYPE="fr_FR.iso885915@euro"
LC_NUMERIC="fr_FR.iso885915@euro"
LC_TIME="fr_FR.iso885915@euro"
LC_COLLATE="fr_FR.iso885915@euro"
LC_MONETARY="fr_FR.iso885915@euro"
LC_MESSAGES="fr_FR.iso885915@euro"
LC_PAPER="fr_FR.iso885915@euro"
LC_NAME="fr_FR.iso885915@euro"
LC_ADDRESS="fr_FR.iso885915@euro"
LC_TELEPHONE="fr_FR.iso885915@euro"
LC_MEASUREMENT="fr_FR.iso885915@euro"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="fr_FR.iso885915@euro"

thank's for your help

If this is a first install, why are you using an 8bit locale ?

Because that's not my first linux install.
I kept all my files in my home dir which was on a separate partition.
That's with this one I have the problem.

Thank's for helping

IMHO, that's a case for something like convmv, not an 8bit locale.
...but for the sake of argument, what's the output of 'LC_ALL=C ls -b' on those paths ?
Also, thunderbird is gtk+, which doesn't like getting non-utf8 encoded strings.

Quote:

LC_ALL=C ls -b :
[...]
T\303\251l\303\251chargements
[...]

For Thunderbid :
I see subdirs in TB as I see them in konqueror :
for example : CollÚge.sbd

'\303\251l\303\251' is '\xc3\xa9l\xc3\xa9'...which is utf8 for 'élé'...so pretty much what I've said before.

OK, you're right : I test and convmv says it's already utf8.

My problem is now what I have to do to see it correctly in konqueror ?
Why did I see it correctly in it in konsole ?
What the best, changing all the file names in iso8859 or changing the way konqueror read them (how ?)
I down know how kubuntu (my previous distrib) managed all that....

Thank's again for your help

... :roll:

A strong hint - don't rely on convmv detection heuristics - they're too much of hit and miss.

I'd also say your previous distribution most likely didn't do any 'managing' of this problem. In ext4fs (and most other Linux file systems) file names are just 'const char*', created in current locale - the system doesn't verify them in any way. Google a bit about it - there are quite a few articles/rants about the problems this design creates.

I know now that my file names are uft8 so I've change my locale to utf8 and all is now correct.
My mistake was to suppose that my previous system had code the file name with iso8859-15.

Thank you for the hint

And thank's again for having lead me to the solution.
