a few years back there used to be some storage usb parameters and these days you need scsi emulation and some other stuff.
not sure if that has changed in the past few years.

easy way is to boot up a livecd where the hardware works and check out he loaded modules and the kernel config in use.

hadadat,

Code:
# NOTE: USB_STORAGE depends on SCSI but BLK_DEV_SD may
# also be needed; see USB_STORAGE Help for more info
CONFIG_USB_STORAGE=y

You will have BLK_DEV_SD as thats needed for your HDD.
You also need SCSI Generic to support the SCSI protocol over other transports, such as USB.
If you have that in your kernel, you will have some /dev/sg* nodes. They are required for USB storage, CD writing (not reading) and other things.

those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

Enabling scsi generic worked

Thanks for your help
