greetings to all,
I know I'll get scolded for this one but I really don't know the exact keyword(s) for this, my apologies.
I'm trying to use "app-mobilephone/gammu" and its current version in my system is: "1.33"
what I would like to try is to use its latest version which is: "1.36"
all that I need is a 'direction' if anyone can point me to a howto/guideline.
thanks in advance |

There's no gammu-1.36 in official tree. You could look for an overlay containing an updated package, or, failing that, write an ebuild to support the new version, and place it in your local overlay. |

I don't see that version in an overlay but I see a live -9999 version (from the master repo upstream) you could potentially unmask.

I know there is no gammu 1.36 from the official tree, this is why I'm asking ^_^ but thanks for pointing on creating an ebuild, seems this is 1 direction for me to go, thanks
if you don't mind sir, how to do 'that' way your saying? this seems new to me with the 9999 |

"-9999" versions usually build the latest development version from the upstream repos (git or svn or whatever). |

dab_s_bad,
Try the following for a simple version bump
Set up your local overlay if you don't nave one already.
cp -r /usr/portage/app-mobilephone/gammu to app-mobilephone/gammu in your local overlay.
In your local overlay, cp gammu-1.33.0.ebuild gammu-1.36.ebuild
Then digest the new ebuild.
The details are in the Gentoo Handbook
Pay particular attention to the version number in the ebuild name. If you want 1.36 and its actually called 1.36.0 the tarball fetch will fail
It may not build and if it does, it may not work. If all is well, you have just done a simple version bump for yourself
If it works for you, file a version bump bug request, describing what you did, how you tested and the results you got.
I can confirm that it builds and installs but I have no idea what it does, so I can't test. _________________ Regards,

sorry for the ultra late reply on this one
my current geode system seems to have disk problems, I'll resume if I'm able to revive it back
and thanks Neddy and all for the suggestions |
