yeah when it came down to doing serious eye candy or getting work done, window manker completed neither unforunately :-\
e16 didn't please me 100% either. Lots of little bugs, hopefully e17 will be better once it builds. It already won the eye candy category. |

GenKreton ... I have been running e17 for a while on gentoo and I have to say that it is by far my favourite desktop to use. beyond the eye-candy (which there is pleanty of) ... it is also an amazingly fast wm...
currently there is work being done to port it over to edje .... the initial cvs commit should be any day now.
below is a screenshot of my current e17 desktop......

Looks promising. I'll try it as soon as the ebuild works. |

I can agree with the lack of eye candy (although with xft support, it can look very nice), but unproductive? It's a very productive, comfortable environment for me... more so than any other I've tried. |

I'll second that! For my tastes there is no better combination. Window Maker took me a while to figure out all the neat stuff you could do but when I did figure it all out I knew I wasn't going to be changing WMs again. I actually had Window Maker installed for a while but I didn't like it that much at the time and used Flux instead. I just kept messing around with Window Maker every once in a while and discovered some very useful features. The dock and the clip makes things so much more efficient for me. I also love how you can configure certain window attributes associated with a specific application, while leaving others unaffected. I use irssi and mplayer without borders or titlebars but leave the titlebar on for things like nedit, so i can tell at a glance whether or not the file I have been working on has been modified or not. I also love "hiding" applications and then attaching them to certain workspaces, then being able to collapse the tiles into the clip when I need the real estate. When I found the keyboard shortcuts I dropped Flux altogether.
As for ROX, what better to pair with my single-click patched Window Maker than a fast single-click file manager. Easy to use and fast, that's all I need for a file manager. |
Windowmaker all the way. I use it with Gnome 2.4 took a while to get the gnome config correct. Basically you have to not use gnome session - just gnome-panel and nautilus sans desktop. _________________ Gentoo: it's like wiping your ass with silk. |

I seem to be having the same trouble you are in emerging fvwm-themes. Here is my error message:
Quote: |
checking for FvwmM4... /usr/lib/fvwm/2.5.8/FvwmM4
configure error:
You have fvwm-2.5.8 which is not up to date.
You need at least fvwm-2.4.8 |
Seems kind of funny to me. |

You could always use Openbox 3 and pick a panel app. XFCE's panel will work, as will gnome-panel, kicker, and pypanel. Here's a screenshot; I don't use panels and taskbars myself, though.

looks nice.
Didnt knew openbox had the apps icons on the workspace list.
Doesnt look bad, fluxbox also have the workspace list and the open apps on middle-mouse-click, but no icons .. i gotta ask for that one
ps: be carefull when posting snapshots, the mods usually send these treads to the dups. _________________ linux: #232767 |

Thanks. Having the app icons in the workspace list is a nice touch; it lends consistency to the interface. I wonder if the Fluxbox devs can borrow the relevant C code from Openbox.
I'm not satisfied with the wallpaper, though. Even though I followed the brushed metal tutorial by jodrell, it didn't come out right. Maybe I shouldn't have used 96dpi instead of 72dpi for the image resolution.
(ps: is your avatar some European cartoon character? She looks kinda cheeky. ) |
