I don't know when it stopped working, but now I found out that the gvfsd-fuse which should mount remote location in ~/.gvfs is no longer started automatically when accessing a remote location (like sftp://...). This results in being unable to open documents in such locations from the file manager.

Previously, that gvfs directory was supposed to be ~/.gvfs, but now it should be found in /run/user/<user-id>/gvfs according to various sources on the net. However, no directory /run/user does exist on my machine, and creating it doesn't make gvfsd-fuse start up. I can start the daemon manually, but IMO that's not a proper solution.

Any idea what changed here and what I can do to get this running again? Does my user need to be in a special group for gvfsd-fuse to work?

ls -la /dev/fuse:
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 10, 229 Apr 23 06:53 /dev/fuse
