|
|
Hi,
I use gento since about 7 or 8 years now. Its the linux of choice on all of my linux boxes.
However since a year or so, I keep getting reverse dependency trouble when I try to
emerge -uD world
(dependency pulled in by....)
...
I end up deleting most of the packages and reinstalling the updated packages.
Is this a general issue that starts building up or are we adding to many new packages?? |

How often are you updating? Less than monthly and you will have a problems. Probably at least twice a month is needed to stay ahead of the changes.
How many overlays are you using? They can cause dependency problems as they are not necessarily maintained to the same standard as the main tree and can interact with each other in unexpected ways.
Also, have you made friends with the --backtrack=42 option? It really helps if portage starts getting confused about how to resolve blocks. Whenever you have problems the -v for more information can often tell you what is really going on. A -N might also be called for as use flags sometimes change, and the -a (for ask) should be standard practice in any portage call.
You should also make sure your world file hasn't gotten cluttered. Nothing causes blockers quite like packages that shouldn't be there. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order.
Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box. |

From my experience, updating monthly is pretty reliable if one uses the stable tree without too much items in packages.accept_keywords... _________________ My current OpenPGP key:
