i switched to gentoo. and had some trouble with my terminals not showing symbols correctly:
i tried xterm aterm Eterm.

My terminal:

linux_girl,

I believe it may be the termcap abilities that you need and are not working out for you. I tried yoeman with gnome-terminal and the colors look as they should. However, when I use xterm, I don't get colors, but it at least looks usable. I don't think it's a font problem per se, it's a termcap issue. If you are able to emerge gnome-terminal, it may work the best.

If that is not workable in your environment, you might be able to get xterm to work.

Try both 'xterm -u8' and 'xterm +u8' and see if you notice any differences.

Oh, I also installed pangoterm and it looked right with colors.
