Can't get plymouth to work. Maybe my environment is unusual, so I followed the plymouth and dracut wikis, and extrapolated where I thought it necessary, but no luck. It looks like the boot process gets stuck before init; pressing any key on the top row (F1-F12, Home, End, Insert, Delete) will switch to a vc/screen that shows the desired theme, but that's it, no progress after that. Every time such a key is pressed, the original console (presumably vc1) prints another line of "libpng error". Maybe that indicates a problem with the initramfs? I don't normally use one.
Environment: nearly up-to-date stable system; openrc; NVidia Optimus; grub legacy; plymouth 0.8.8-r4; plymouth-openrc-plugin 0.1.2; dracut. |

Got a bit further. Turns out dracut --hostonly does not create a usable initramfs on this machine. The handover works now, but the screen still shows the usual console output, and one needs to press a function key to switch to the configured plymouth theme. |

That's working now. "quiet splash" was the magic sauce. |
