I've got a real problem with display resolutions which I can't figure out. One of my user accounts with KDE-4.14.3 keeps getting set to the wrong frequency and, every time I correct it, it goes back again whenever anything uses full screen mode. The program that caused the initial problem was Supertuxkart but Minecraft also does the same.
In the display settings of KDE I have the following frequencies available, Auto, 60.0Hz and 59.9Hz. The one that it appears to keep switching to is 59.9Hz which messes up the display. If I pick 60.0Hz or Auto, everything is correct so why does it keep picking 59.9Hz? I'm using nvidia-drivers-340.76 and my /etc/X11/xorg.conf is as follows
Code:

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig:  version 260.19.36  (buildmeister@swio-display-x86-rhel47-01.nvidia.com)  Tue Jan 18 17:15:22 PST 2011

EndSection

The xorg.conf was created by nvidia-xconfig and when I look at the Refresh Rate in nvidia-settings-331.20 it says the Refresh Rate of the monitor is 59.95Hz and not 60.0Hz!

Where does the KDE display setting get the two different settings from? Where does it store it and how can I remove the 59.9Hz frequency completely?
I don't know if it's related but is also takes forever when I switch from xorg to a console by ctrl, alt F? and back again. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The settings are stored in the ~/.kde4/share/apps/kscreen/ directory. You can try removing the file in the directory, or replacing it with a file from a user profile which works.

Well I did as you suggested but the result was the same. Where do the two frequencies originate from? Are they derived from the xorg.conf file or somewhere else?

andrewwalker27,

Please post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.
The nVidia driver will ignore your
Code:
    HorizSync       28.0 - 33.0
    VertRefresh     43.0 - 72.0
settings as you have not told it to ignore the EDID data provided by the display.
If the display does not provide EDID data, nVidia will still ignore your guidance and revert to 640x480.

Just to add to the confusion, I took a look at the info. on the monitor itself and it says it is running at H 74.3Khz and V 60.2Hz at 1920 x 1200!
I'm only really using this resolution, it's just software that runs in full screen mode changing it that causes the problems.
How come the EDID only picks 50Hz though?

Thought this might help but I don't really know much about EDID

Code:
PhenomIIx6 fred # get-edid | parse-edid
This is read-edid version 3.0.1. Prepare for some fun.
Attempting to use i2c interface
No EDID on bus 1
No EDID on bus 2
No EDID on bus 4
2 potential busses found: 0 3
Will scan through until the first EDID is found.
Pass a bus number as an option to this program to go only for that one.
Bus 0 doesn't really have an EDID...
256-byte EDID successfully retrieved from i2c bus 3
Looks like i2c was successful. Have a good day.

Hmm, you have data blocks, but not video ones... weird
Something strange happened. Please contact the author,

Is there a way of ignoring EDID and forcing a specific setting?
