I hit exit from the menu and tried to launch steam again, and got the exact same error message. It still says that STEAM_RUNTIME is automatically set on. I do have the output from the installation, that I think is listing the programs that are executed to successfully bring up steam. It says things like:
Code:
ExecCommandLine: ""/home/fractured/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam" "
STEAM_RUNTIME has been set by the user to: /home/fractured/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime
ExecCommandLine: "/home/fractured/.steam/root/ubuntu12_32/steam steam://open/driverhelperready"
ExecSteamURL: "steam://open/driverhelperready"

Hmmm, I guess I might be able to clear up some confusion here.

Firstly, whereis did not return anything because there was nothing to return. Following the manual method one does not install anything to the system paths (one is of course free to do so), which I kind of like. This is one of the few exceptions of when I like to not use Portage for managing a package, because it can't exactly manage it at all (Steam manages itself, though it's possible to tinker with the paths and such). The ebuild (I haven't looked into it at all aside from when it was very new) is likely a very working solution these days, but I still prefer to keep Steam separate.

I actually moved the Steam folder that is created by the Steam installer to another location from my home path, and made a symlink to it, to keep it away.

Perhaps a hacky method, but I feel more clean somehow.

Indeed, running Steam (or anything else that doesn't require it) as root is a bad idea, and will at least mess up file permissions for any regular user that should be able to use the files afterwards, not to mention the security risks.

In fact, if you did not remove /home/fractured/.steam as well after this, it might be the reason for the trouble you are having now with the ebuild-Steam. ^^;

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Thanks for your suggestions, but if I were to switch to using the manual installation method, what exactly would I have to do to remove the currently installed steam? Would removing the .steam directory suffice? Or are there other steps that need to be taken also?

Well I wasn't exactly suggesting you should switch back, but merely hoping to explain the things that seemed to be unclear. ^^

Using Portage to unmerge, then removing any Steam-related directories under the home path of the user should suffice, but again, I'm not trying to get you not use the ebuild, since there is effort going towards it, and such things like to be used!

Perhaps keep it for now at least, since you already installed it, but make the installation clean. That is, remove or move the directories Steam creates, which are at least Steam, .steam, and .local/share/Steam under the home path of the user.

I installed steam as my user, and it launched after installation. So I closed it and tried to run it again, but I got a similar error:

I think its the exact same error as before - it might be a little different at the end due to a fault in my internet connection. I also noticed that the number after segmentation fault is different every time. I feel pretty lost at this point - is it a permissions error? Is my user not able to access certain scripts?

Did you try simply running it again after that and if so, does it just keep doing the same thing then?

Yeah, it installs fine and runs fine at installation, but when I try to run it after closing it - I get the above message.

I haven't installed any drivers, I just checked support for my Intel GMA X3100 in the kernel settings - and since I just installed gentoo, I have the newest kernel.

Yeah, it's a fairly old 32-bit machine, but I was thinking it could handle a few simple steam games anyway.

How exactly is memtest used? I've opened a tar.gz of the source code, where exactly do I go from here? Is it meant to be placed on a CD?

If this is intel graphics related, have you tried switching from sna to uxa? I remember having a similar problem (segfaults in games) on an old laptop with GMA graphics.

I haven't had the chance to get the games installed, I just get the segfault when I run the steam program itself.

Maybe something is conflicting - I guess I could always do a fresh gentoo install, install steam, and if it works it works, if not I'll just have to forget about it.

The segfaults happened when I tried to start games. If you want to try, emerge x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel with the uxa flag and change xorg conf:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
Code:
Section "Device"
   Identifier  "Device0"
   Driver      "intel"
   Option      "AccelMethod"  "uxa"
EndSection
Also make sure your user is in the games group.

Where would the flag for the driver go? Would I need to add anything to packages.use, or to make.conf?

I got the same error after doing that - do I need to reinstall steam or reboot first?

You'd need to make sure you configure X to actually use that acceleration method (as was mentioned). No need to reboot, but X will need to be restarted.

I am not too hopeful that it will help, since you reportedly managed to initially run it, but it breaks after. It could, however, as I've seen something similar with an older Intel chip that a testing laptop of mine has. If it uses sna, and runs something game-like, the chip will hang and a reboot is needed to 'fix' it. I don't remember if I had it happen with Steam itself, as I'm not even sure the native client was even out yet back then. I will test soon'ish!

You can check if you are experiencing the same issue by looking at the output of dmesg after you get the error.

There is even a bug about it, or at least I think it's the same deal (same what my machine is doing; I still doubt yours is hitting this, but I guess that's yet to be seen): bugs.freedesktop.org - Bug 53348 - [855gm] GPU hang whilst playing Imperialism 2 under wine

I was curious about the dump-file, and if it would change anything if you removed it, but I see from the other log that it was successfully uploaded at least once, yet the segmentation fault was still triggered. I would at least look into clearing /tmp from anything Steam related, especially if you don't tend to boot often. In fact, if you didn't boot or otherwise clear that directory after running Steam as root, there might still be things lingering there.

One good example of Steam's bad /tmp use is that it tends to leave a certain file (starting with steam_chrome_shmem...) that will make Steam run very slow if another user runs it and the file is still around from the other. I did just now look at it though to confirm the name of it, and I see my user name is now there, too, so they might have finally fixed this!

Anyblue, some things to try after the fault: does glxgears or any game you might get into your hands still run?

Something else to try: use STEAM_RUNTIME=0 to disable the runtime (this may produce a different kind of an error message, which I suspect it will especially if the related USE-flag is disabled, though I have not checked what the flag does exactly).

For example:

Code:
STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam
