i thought whatever is picked up by the livecd will also be picked up by genkernel. however, it wont pick up my wifi controller. this is the relevant output of lspci -k from ubuntu on the same HP laptop (same driver is used by gentoo livecd, i cheked)
Code:
08:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 3160 (rev 83)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160
   Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi

even when i manually modprobe iwlwifi module it does not get picked up when i check the controller. please help me solve this.

h2sammo,

WiFi is a licencing minefield because of the firmware. Little on no wifi support is provided on the liveCD.

You need to rebuild your kernel with iwlwifi support.
You may need firmware too.
Its best to make iwlwifi as a module.
