ffmpeg, libvdpau, and legacy nvidia drivers

Hi everybody,

I noticed an odd update today, namely that some packages now depend on libvdpau whereas they never did before. This would be okay except that libvdpau depends on a nvidia drivers for more modern cards than I have (I have to use the 173.14.39 drivers). Apparently, mplayer has now made it a dependency as has vlc and xine.

What on Earth has been going on lately? Has everybody gone bat shit crazy in loading up software with unneeded dependencies? Sorry, this is just really annoying.

Any way around this nonsense?
