Awesome job from everyone involved! (I think at least a3li... probably mostly a3li.)

I like it. I like it a lot! (Really.)

Grab it (while) it's hot: Gentoo announces total website makeover

Ping!

At 1st I found it look good. Now I notice the site is loading slow and opening the forum now takes 2-3 clicks instead of 1. Not really an improvement imho.

While I like the font and the layout, I feel the animation too slow.
Also, I'm afraid that the readability could be a bit deteriorate.

Anyway, I LOVE the Gentoo way to invent :)

HUjucie

Quote:
“Gentoo Linux’s seven-person council determined that the interests of the community were not being served by the previous site and decided that it had to be made more inclusive,” said Web project lead Alex Legler (a3li). The new site is also available via Gopher.
Quote:

“We accept that members in more fortunate circumstances may feel that a site with a 16-colour palette and an optimal screen resolution of 640 x 200 pixels is not the best fit for their needs but we urge such members to keep the greater good in mind. The vast majority of potential new Gentoo Linux users are still using IBM XT computers, storing their information on 5.25-inch floppy disks and communicating via dial-up BBS,” said Roy Bamford (neddyseagoon), a Foundation trustee.

Hahaha. Very nice dig at some forum discussions about website redesign vs text browsers :D

Anyway, this site has much more style than the old one.

In that sense, I do dislike all the modern sites... a lot.

It could be better, but for what it is, I do like this and am having fun with it, which can be rare in this day and age. ^^

Nice one. Thanks to a3li and any others involved!

PS: Any chance of keeping this as an optional style sheet or something?

Somewhere in the wild, wild gentoo-chat:

Code:
[14:56] <wiktor_b> a3li: can we please keep this site?
[14:56] <a3li> why would we throw it away after launching it?
[14:56] <wiktor_b> yay!
[14:56] <Chiitoo> Heh.
[14:56] <wiktor_b> no, I'm serious
[14:57] <wiktor_b> this is one of the most usable sites I've recently seen
[14:57] <Chiitoo> Personally, I already stashed it for safe-keeping hihi.

My first MS-DOS computer, an 80286 bought in 1989, had an EGA video card and a 12 inch monochrome screen. The card was capable of 64 colors I think, and I ran fractint on it in glorious grayscale. In 1991, I could finally afford a VGA card, capable of 256 colors in 640x280, and a 14 inch color screen.

I also ran a "Game of Life" program that I wrote in Turbo Pascal, the entire R-pentomino sequence ran in about 15 minutes. On my old Z80 computer, I had a Basic program that used abt. 30 hours for the same sequence, after heavy optimization. The first version, in 1985, took about 14 days to finish.

Your browser display the gentoo old-style page better than mine! (I use firefox too) My fonts seem bold/smooth. It could be a font problem? Do you use a particular fonts/settings?

I really, really love it - great job! Glad it was still online when I opened the website today, else I would have missed it. :D

Would be really nice - at least keep a mirror copy as "april2015.gentoo.org" or similar; would be sad to loose that beauty... :)
