I once installed the backgammon xgammon game, and it insisted on having some "Helvetica" font installed. I remember installing it, but I can't remember its name. But this ugly font appears as the default font in Firefox wherever "Helvetica" is mentioned in the CSS. I've unmerged xgammon, and I want to get rid of this ugly font as well. Ideas, anyone?

Probably one of the media-fonts/font-* packages. Most of them are old bitmap fonts.

Thanks!

I opened the world file, and found the line "media-fonts/font-adobe-100dpi". I removed it, did an emerge --depclean, and restarted Firefox. Now the "Helvetica" pages look way much better!

You can disable bitmap fonts with eslect fontconfig, if it is indeed that.

If a site us actually using Helvetica tho (or most MS/Apple fonts), they tend to look bad with full hinting. I've started overriding the hinting to slight for certain fonts, like Helvetica, which makes them look quite beautiful, actually. However, this override does not appear to work with webfonts in Firefox...

The Helvetica font appeared very pixellated, with no anti-aliasing. Now the pages that used the Helvetica font render with Dejavu Sans, which is my preferred font for almost everything.
