There is a new kms use flag that has been added to mutter-3.14.3 when updating to gnome 3.14.x (which was recently market stable on amd64).

My question is, does this flag provide any performance benefits if you are on a proprietary driver (e.g. nvidia in my case)?

This talks only about open-source drivers : https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Configuration#Kernel_modesetting

And this post https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/kernel_mode_setting says that:

Quote:

Note: The proprietary nvidia and catalyst drivers also implement kernel mode-setting, but as they do not use the built-in kernel implementation, they lack an fbdev driver for the high-resolution console.

The KMS flag is pulling in several flags in other packages, including mesa (gl|es2), so I wasn't sure whether I want to recompile all that.
