It would be more interesting for people trying to help you to give more thorough explanation, like what have you tried, what doesn't work etc ...

anyway there's ebuild for 11 in two overlays - http://gentoo.mahdi.cz/app-emulation:vmware-workstation.html - have you tried those?

I'd wait until the ebuild hits at least the vmware overlay. (See bug 531682 about the difficulties e.g.)

There does seem like a lot of difficulties with 11 right now. I think I will wait for it to hit the overlay as suggested.

Code:
Linux gentoo 3.18.11-gentoo #4 SMP Sun Apr 19 22:57:53 CEST 2015 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3225 CPU @ 3.30GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Code:

VMware-Workstation-Full-11.1.0-2496824.x86_64.bundle

some kernel module doesnt get compiled . look like kernel api changed and vmware didnot take it into account.

any idea on how to get it to work ? :roll:

First try:
Code:

./VMware-Workstation-Full-11.1.0-2496824.x86_64.bundle --uninstall-product vmware-workstation
mkdir /usr/local/portage
cd  /usr/local/portage
git clone https://github.com/deploylinux/mattmGentooDevRepo.git

adding PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage/mattmGentooDevRepo" to make.conf

Code:

echo "<=vmware-workstation-10.0.3.1895310"  >/ etc/portage/package.mask/vmware-workstation

Code:

For more information about Blocked Packages, please refer to the following
section of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook (architecture is irrelevant):

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:X86/Working/Portage#Blocked_packages

The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
 (see "package.accept_keywords" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by app-emulation/vmware-workstation-11.0.0.2305329::mattmDev
# required by vmware-workstation (argument)
=app-emulation/vmware-modules-304 ~amd64
# required by app-emulation/vmware-workstation-11.0.0.2305329::mattmDev
# required by app-emulation/vmware-modules-304::mattmDev
=dev-libs/libgcrypt-1.5.4-r100 ~amd64

Use --autounmask-write to write changes to config files (honoring
CONFIG_PROTECT). Carefully examine the list of proposed changes,
paying special attention to mask or keyword changes that may expose
experimental or unstable packages.

linux_girl,

You don't start over with a kernel .config.

Using the .config you already have working, copy it to your new kernel tree.
cd to the new tree, that now has a copy of your .config.
run make oldconfig.

This silently drops symbols that are not in the kernel, uses the .config to set options that are still in the kernel and asks you about any symbols not already covered.

The process works both to move a .config from an older kernel to a newer one and from a newer kernel to an older one.
Once you have your legal .config, build and install it using your normal process.
