Sometime in the last few months, an update broke the icons in file dialogs in Thunderbird.

The result is that folders and files are indistinguishable from one another:

Any ideas what might be causing this?

So, we're aware this is a problem? Which filepicker is it?

In Firefox I changed the filepicker when this problem first appeared, but that's just a work-around, not a real solution.

This looks like a gnome file dialog in KDE. What icon theme did you configure in KDE's systemsettings - Application Appearance - GTK? (kde-base/systemsettings must be merged with "gtk" use flag)

I have two icon themes listed:

GNOME - Gnome default
Oxygen - Oxygen Team

Oxygen is selected.

Ah ha! Found the problem!

Under the Section "GTK", it shows two icon themes, a main plus a fallback.

In both cases "hicolor" is selected (in German, sorry):

All the icons in the display are the same. When I change to "Oxygen" for the main theme, then test again in Thunderbird, I see normal icons! What happened here? What is this "hicolor" themel, anyway? It seems useless.

Code:
eix hicolor-icon-theme
[I] x11-themes/hicolor-icon-theme
     Available versions:  0.12^bs ~0.14^bs
     Installed versions:  0.12^bs(12:32:11 09/30/14)
     Homepage:            http://icon-theme.freedesktop.org/wiki/HicolorTheme
Description:         Fallback theme for the freedesktop icon theme specification

What the description says: Fallback. It is far from complete.

Or maybe you do not have the "hicolor-icon-theme" package installed at all? It is a dependeny of gimp and kdebase-data, which is itseld a dependency of kdebase-runtime-meta.

Yes, I do have hicolor-icon-theme installed:

Code:
$ eix hicolor
[I] x11-themes/hicolor-icon-theme
     Available versions:  0.12^bs ~0.14^bs
     Installed versions:  0.12^bs(03:17:45 07.10.2012)
     Homepage:            http://icon-theme.freedesktop.org/wiki/HicolorTheme
Description:         Fallback theme for the freedesktop icon theme specification

It was installed in 2012; the problem didn't appear until some time late last year, so that can't be what triggered it.

I wonder if the keyworded version works, but my curiosity is not enough to want to emerge it :)
