PostPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2015 6:28 am    Post subject: No X server (gui) after last system update? Reply with quote

After system updating and reboot, I do not have desk top gui, only terminal.
startx gives some errors like: unable to connect to X server...
current ver of pixman: 0.32.6
xauth: file /root/.serverauth.2607 does not exist
module ABI major version (15) does not match the server's version ( 18 )
During the booting I do not see any error message on screen.
Please advise!

Have you reinstalled all the drivers? And why as root?

Dont know - I just updated the system with this command:

I always do it as a root.

Thanks

I see this file: Xorg.0.log bit it is empty
when try to start startx I get the same error messages as noted before

I do not know what is wrong - why it happens after each system update -
last time I needed to re-emerge xorg... It drives me crazy
maybe need to change some configuration or something else...

Just guessing, maybe they built in some noob-proof feature and it won't run as root any more.

Did not know I suppose to run system updating as a non-root -
I thought on the opposite - without root it could not do the changes...
System updating should be run as a non-root?

*sigh* no, this comes back to my original post...

Quote:

xauth: file /root/.serverauth.2607 does not exist
This is implying that you are attempting to launch startX as root.

When questioned your reply was " I always do it as a root. "

You have now been asked a very similar question and your reply does not follow the premise

System updates of course can ONLY be done as root, that does not mean that you SHOULD launch the applications as root

so again, why are you attempting to startx as root?
does startx work as a non-root
do you use /etc/init.d/xdm with some display manager?

Why not.. sorry but I do not get your point -
Please explain what root has to do with my problem?
Quote:

No.
Quote:

Yes - I think that now it is lxdm.

Thanks

Running the X server as root is bad form. It may not be the explanation for your problem, but you still should not do it. Your original problem was an X11 driver ABI mismatch, which should have been cured by the advice from Naib and jfp. If you still have exactly the same error message, then please post the output of emerge --info $(eix --only-names -I x11-drivers/) ; eix -I x11-drivers/.

Hu Hi,

Quite difficult to put here these outputs without X server...
Code:
(eix --only-names -I x11-drivers/

This gives a long drivers list.
Code:
eix -I x11-drivers/

This gives one driver with [?] - BTW: I have this sign instead of [I] on some other packages,
for long time, dont know why - anyway here is the driver with [?]:
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel

Thanks

Hu,

Sorry, I thoght that there is -1 instead -I in the commands so here the right outputs:
Code:
(eix --only-names -I x11-drivers/

x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev
x11-drivers/xf86-input-synaptics
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel
Code:
eix -I x11-drivers/

[?]x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev
[?]x11-drivers/xf86-input-synaptics
[?]x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel

pmam,

Your original post said module
Code:
ABI major version (15) does not match the server's version ( 18 )

This tells that the Xorg server has been updated to a version with an ABI version of 18 but one or more of the drivers you are trying to load has an ABI of 15, so that they are not compatible.

As Naib suggested,
Code:
emerge @x11-module-rebuild
will rebuild all of your Xorg drivers, so the ABI match again.

Provided
Code:
emerge @x11-module-rebuild
completes with no errors, startx should work.
However, if you are using a binary blob driver, you will need to unload its kernel module before you do startx.
Tell us the errors if you get errors with emerge @x11-module-rebuild.

Never run startx as root. Its too easy to do accidental damage.

NeddySeagoon,

I have run again:
Code:
emerge @x11-module-rebuild

No errors. But when I try to run startx get the same errors as above - ABI ...

Quote:
if you are using a binary blob driver

Dont know what is it...

Thanks

pmam,

What does
Code:
emerge @x11-module-rebuild -pv
show?
Please post /var/log/Xorg.0.log wgetpaste will make it easy.
This log will tell which driver is the cause of the problem.

A 'binary blob' means code for which the sources are not available. Only the binary that you run.
I this case it means the nvidia or fglrx kernel modules.

NeddySeagoon,

Code:
emerge @x11-module-rebuild -pv

Three drivers to rebuild:
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel -2.99.917
x11-drivers/xf86-input-synaptics-1.8.1
x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev-2.9.1

Quote:
Please post /var/log/Xorg.0.log wgetpaste will make it easy.

This is the problem - I can not do it without GUI... Not nice situation without X server...
I can see there the ABI issue and right after:
Failed to load module intel
Failed to load module modesetting...

If there is a way to copy and post here this log file , please let me know...

EDIT: just a moment, I will try to mount or ssh from another machine and get the log file...

Thanks

Yes, as NeddySeagoon says, wgetpaste helps to do this :-)

See:
http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Troubleshooting
Under "Collecting Additional Information", it shows how to use wgetpaste.

Basically:
Code:
wgetpaste  /var/log/Xorg.0.log
