i'm looking to be able to do rdp type functionality into my gentoo workstation like i do on windows and use the existing desktop that is there. if i disconnect from client a, the desktop still stays around and i can access from another place.

anyone have suggestions on this?

Am I assuming that you talk about remotedesktop feature? If so it depends on how you use your X-server and its configuration files. Afaik the X-server and the client can be run on two different machines and I do not see a problem there.

Did you try to use the search engine of your choice regarding remote desktop on linux?

yes, i've been googling around and thought i'd ask folks what they use if anything. it looks like there's a few options i'll have to look at NoDesktop, FreeNX, xrdp.

thanks, for the helpful tips...

See TightVNC on the Gentoo Wiki for one option. (I haven't used it.)

Never tried is with persistent desktop between sessions, but I sometimes use X11 forwarding (with ssh). Enabled XDMCP in the graphical login and then connect to it from another linux or from windows with MobaXterm.

Normally I just login the remote machine and then let another application run on the remote pc with the graphical window displayed in the desktop of the machine I'm on. I find it a lot faster than VNC that I used before. With MobaXterm I can get the whole desktop or just a single window (or several wondows of the same session).

With XDMCP on linux I have used it to work on a remote pc. When I then get in the graphical login (KDM for me) I just choose the remote machine and it starts a session like on the local machine. I that case I'm not running a local session.

But as said I don't let that desktop run and then login from another location. On the other hand I do not see a reason why that shouldn't be possible.
