Solution: Remove shm from /etc/fstab

Yesterday I ran "sudo emerge -avuDN @world" (I think it was about a month ago I ran it the last time).

Today I found out that google-chrome-stable has been broken by this. I've tried fixing this for ~6h now and I think it's time to ask for some advice what package broke it.

UPDATE: I've added summary from what I've learned into this post.
It seems there's a bus error with shared memory?

The symptoms

  • Start chrome (from clean profile)
  • It can now crash directly
  • If it didn't crash and I go to google.com I sometimes (1 out of 10 times) actually get to google and I will be able to type in 'test' or something else, then in crashes directly
  • If I go to the settings it will crash
  • Sometimes if I just open the 'options' menu it will crash
  • Debugging chromium with gdb and pausing it after a SIGBUS will stop gvim from running with 'Vim: Caught deadly signal BUS'

Steps I've tried to resolve the problem with

  • New profile (cleaning .config/google-chrome & .cache/google-chrome)
  • Downloading the old version of chrome I had before the update
  • Compiling Chromium (with and without tcmalloc flag)
  • Downloading google-chrome-beta and google-chrome-unstable
  • Googling a LOT
  • Backtrace of Chromium
  • Creating a new user and only running bare X (no kde)
  • Ran 'emerge -e @world' (about 4 times after different settings, one after I changed to safe CFLAGS)
  • Downgrading gdbus-coregen and glib to the version before 'emerge -avuDN @world'
  • Downgrading gtk+, cairo, psmisc

EDIT: I just remembered that emerge does actually logs everything in /var/log/emerge.log I parsed the file and created something a little more human-readable

to just to be sure, make a new user from scratch, and just launch a x-session withotu fancy stuff. xdm preferred with only a xterminal. than try again ..

Tested to create a new user and starting X (without kde), didn't work :/
emerge -e world also finished. Didn't help :/

It's just so weird... I will keep searching for more possibilities later today.

Maybe I got some old CFLAGS (which broke a library after gcc-upgrade?) as I really haven't changed them in about 6 years.

That flag wasn't correct. I used the script now instead of just copying old use-flags. In addition I got the mmxext flag :)

Do I really have to do another 'emerge -e world' now? :P (Before I'll just check the so the CFLAGS are correct)

EDIT: The reason for all CFLAGS were because of distcc which I'm haven't used in ages. I'll use safe CFLAGS instead.

After doing another 'emerge -e @world' with correct CFLAGS and CPU_FLAGS_X86 chrome still crashes.

I have some clue now what causes it though. I've gotten BUS error a few times now.
If I'm listening to music pulseaudio will sometimes die when chrome crashes (rarely amarok crashes too). I tried again to login with a new user in bare X, but chrome still dies.

Could it be glib and gdbus-codegen which causes the problems? I tried to update to newer versions (as the old version of glib isn't available anymore), but this didn't help. Will try to find old ebuilds and install it again.

Code:
dmesg
please. That should reveal a bit.

As you did some changes I may want to ask for a fresh dmesg, ty

Maybe you need to enable some memory "bug" features in the kernel. There used to be do not use this memory area because of htis and that in the bios. Did you enable those restriction for the memory in this kernel which you use?

When you may post htose bus errors we may find a way here ..

+1
Just wanted to add that I have the exact same problem and haven't found a solution yet.
Tried chrome stable, beta, chromium, various nvidia-drivers versions.

After downgrading and doing 'emerge -e gdbus-codegen glib' chrome still isn't fixed. I also tested to upgrade to the latest stable kernel.

Nice seeing I'm not the only one with this error, as in I might find the solution faster :)

Don't know if I have activated those memory bugs in the kernel.

yeah i have to use opera and firefox meanwhile.
i ran /usr/bin/cpuinfo2cpuflags-x86 and put that both in USE and CPU_FLAGS_X86
then tried gcc-config 4.7 instead of 4.8, and re-emerging everything since xmas, but no luck.
not that those flags would matter to the chrome binary release anyways, but some dependency.
i also tried cleaning up things in my home dir and running it as a new user, but no luck.

dmesg seems to be okay

Quote:

could be just a warning but else i do not see anything worth mentioning

I'm currently emerging chromium with debug symbols (I hope), maybe that can give some info about the crash.

Added these make.conf
CFLAGS="-ggdb ..."
USE="debug ..."
FEATURES="splitdebug ..."

I'm not sure I will be able to test it until Sunday though as I'm out of town this weekend.

The last time I saw chromium crash like this was cpu-cflags-related (upstream had hardcoded sse3 stuff in). Yours looks correct though.

See https://code.google.com/p/chromium/wiki/LinuxDebugging if you haven't already.

It looks like Gentoo's default no-debug-symbols policy might have screwed you over, since those backtraces are almost blank. You'll have to rebuild chromium and all its deps with splitdebug enabled to get anything useful out of them.

Are you referring to chromium itself?
Cause we have the same problem with google-chrome, the binary in portage which we obviously can't rebuild.
Both chrome and chromium broke at the same time.

Here's an updated backtrace with chromium symbols.

EDIT: Did some cleanup and added 3 more tries with backtraces.
EDIT2: (2014-02-08) Compiled libc with debug symbols (replaced the 4 tries)
EDIT3: (2014-02-09) Wondering if I need to discard my /usr/src/linux/.config and start from scratch. I'm also thinking of upgrading my 7-year old computer (only updated to SSD before), which would solve the problem :P

I noticed that while debugging chromium and it gdb catches a SIGBUS signal and I tried to start gvim I get this output out of gvim:
"Vim: Caught deadly signal BUS".
As soon as I continue debugging (Chromium terminates) I can start gvim again.

Backtrace (Try 1)
Code:

Program received signal SIGBUS, Bus error.

I might have solved it. I bought a new computer but the error was still there and there was only one thing that I did not follow the handbook, and that was adding shm /dev/shm ... in /etc/fstab (I added it). After I have removed shm from /etc/fstab chrome works again :)[/topic][/gwn]

for your information, i had shm in fstab and a chmod a+rw /dev/shm or something similar because of some crap with chrome if i remember.
i cant test if removing that will help now as i've switched to arch linux.

this problem and on another machine where all video in browsers would play at 2x speed,
constant sound system breakage and stuttering in audio playback over the years,
xorg setup breakage for mouse+kbd every other year,
and many other things made me give up after exactly 13 years with gentoo

i have other priorities now in my life than trying to keep an ever more breaking installation barely alive
