Why would the forums become slow if there is a thread with too many pages?

Edit: Split from Why is Gentoo not switching to systemd? Part 2 and moved to Gentoo Forums Feedback. — JRG

While most features experience relatively minor impact from very long topics, some features require loading large blocks of topics, even the entire topic at once. Once a certain length is reached, per-process memory constraints are encountered. While it is true that the current memory constraints could be relaxed, doing so invites other potential problems, we have experienced DoS when using more relaxed limits, and as such splitting topics over a certain length is presently considered the best viable option.
